Polygamy And Law In Contemporary Saudi Arabia written by Maha Yamani and has been published by Garnet Publishing Ltd this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-07-01 with History categories.

The topic of polygamy in Islamic countries is generally perceived by outsiders as something linked to harems and Hollywood-style foreign intrigues. The practice is frequently viewed through sexual connotations and male power versus female powerlessness. The purpose of this book is to shed light on the often misunderstood polygamous situation in modern Saudi Arabia. Through a unique series of local interviews with both men and women involved in polygamy, both maritally and professionally, the author invites the reader into the homes and personal lives of the people directly affected. The result is a moving, candid examination of the frame of mind, impulses, incentives, reasons and circumstances that drive individuals towards polygamy, as well as the social, legal, economic and emotional consequences that inevitably follow. The book also examines the historical origins of Islamic polygamy in Mecca and Medina, as well as the legal situation in Saudi Arabia today. The author argues that a combination of gender differences created through local laws and public policy decisions, the revival of customary tribal practices and the pressures created by the sudden materialism of modern life have all led towards a misapplication of the original Islamic legal essence of the practice, and a re-adaptation of the laws regulating it.

Insecurity in the Niger Delta: Emerging Threats in Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo and Rivers States is a European Union- funded in-depth study of the issue of insecurity in the Niger Delta, the oil producing region of Nigeria. Security in the region is usually assessed from the context of the absence of threats to the oil industry. This study goes beyond that limited view, using case studies drawn from the six states in the South-South geopolitical zone to show emerging security threats in the region and the complex network of factors behind them. The chapters address issues of insecurity such as youth gangs/cults, sea piracy and sea robbery, election violence, communal conflicts, land disputes, chieftaincy tussles, armed robbery, human trafficking, internal population displacement (IDPs), reintegration of ex-militants, youth unemployment, internet fraud, police brutality, environmental pollution, farmer-herder crises and influx of non-indigenes. The authors critically discuss the different strategies adopted by state governments and communities in the region to address insecurity and explain why these approaches have so far failed to resolve the problem in the region. The study recommends policy options that could improve the security situation for everyday people living and working in Nigeria's Niger Delta region. _________________________________ Tarila Marclint Ebiede is a Political Scientist with expertise on peacebuilding, political violence and armed insurgencies. Social Change And Family Processes written by Majid Al-haj and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-07-09 with Social Science categories.

In this book, Majid Al-Haj analyzes the structure of family kinship groups, the role of women, and fertility among several Arab subcommunities in Israel. He combines historical materials, anthropological evidence, and several major surveys in tracing family and demographic patterns in a developing Arab community. This study is the first to compare Moslems, Christians, and Druze over time in the same community and to integrate issues of modernization and population for minorities. Particular attention is given to the analysis of "internal refugees" among Moslems, the separation of structural from cultural determinants of family patterns, and the distinction between behavior and norms associated with family lifestyles. This volume represents a fascinating case study of an Arab town in the transition to modernity under the conditions of changing layers of minority status in Israeli society. Moreover, the author addresses broader issues of modernization and demographic change characterizing the Middle East and other developing areas of the world where minority ethnic conflict and population processes are intertwined.
