What's the one area from your past that you keep getting your flesh caught in over and over again? Where are you still wounded and bleeding? The good news is that the most unanticipated and rewarding turns in the story often start with the ugliest beginnings. Growing Up Ugly is an inspirational coming-of-age memoir that traces the upbringing of a painfully shy child with chronically low self-esteem--a gifted student reprimanded for daydreaming too much and raised in a struggling inner-city New York neighborhood who emerged to become an artist, a leading educator, and an award-winning scholar. In this new release from Simple Word Publications, author James Haywood Rolling, Jr. composes a rich canvas of raw vignettes, family photos, original illustrations, and vivid poems in order to sketch a candid self-portrait of a Black boy unlocking his creative superpowers. Growing Up Ugly tells the story of: The author's upbringing as the first-born son and namesake of a talented professional artist...and domineering father; the unexpected personal consequences of being bused to school daily from a racially segregated area of Crown Heights to a mostly white neighborhood far across Brooklyn; how being identified and tracked since elementary school as a gifted student contributed to a dangerously distorted view of his own capabilities--until God intervened. No matter who or what first made you feel ugly, here is storytelling that elevates its readers beyond their own trauma, social anxiety, and self-doubt. This is a book for anyone who has ever been underestimated, bullied, abused, or simply overlooked as you reimagine your way from daydreams to destiny. Growing Up Ugly makes a great gift for any family raising children of color, or for adults mentoring or teaching Black boys. An in-depth reflection on the power to reshape how one's presence is seen and felt in the world, this book is also an ideal addition to libraries serving multicultural populations!

In the South, you're brought up to be respectful and well mannered. You don't look ugly, you don't act ugly, and you never divulge the ugly secrets that go on behind closed doors. I was born in the 70's and raised in the 80's. It was a very typical GenX upbringing. I saw my mom in the morning before school, and the rest of the day and night was left to make it on my own. We didn't know what it was to "be offended" or "violated", in fact we were just told to be safe and, don't go in and out of the house but, be back by dark. So, my friends and I were basically feral children left to run the streets and take care of ourselves. Some of us grew up in families that loved us, protected us, and made sure we had all we needed. Some of us grew up in single parent households or were raised by other family members who took on the parenting role. And still, others, may have raised themselves and lived each day in survival mode. I actually went through all three circumstances. Why are you laying there hugging on your momma? What are you, a lesbian? No, I wasn't a lesbian, I was ten years old and just wanted to find comfort in my mother's arms. That was the day I stopped seeking comfort from anyone else. That was the day I knew that I only had myself to depend on. That was the day I refused to give in to emotions and started living in survival mode. This is my story.

I fantasized about people loving me and standing in line to be my friend. I waited to become a swan. Growing Up Ugly is a moving memoir about coming of age and realizing the beauty in this life we are all searching for is within our grasp. Join author Donetta Garman as she drifts in and out of consciousness after suffering a stroke and recalls some of the events in her unusual but loving childhood. After a traumatic birth, Donetta was left homely, clumsy, and awkward. Growing up, she learned to cope with being 'ugly' by laughing at herself and trying to help hold the family together. While her family climate was dysfunctional, the cohesiveness of it was undeniable, and Garman's story is infused with the intense love and resilience of a peculiar but fiercely devoted family. With the help of her family, children, husband, friends, and God, Donetta finds that beauty really is only skin deep and there is a 'swan' just waiting to escape in all of us.

Ugly written by Robert Hoge and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-09-06 with Juvenile Nonfiction categories.

A funny, moving, and true story of an ordinary boy with an extraordinary face that's perfect for fans of Wonder—now available in the U.S. When Robert Hoge was born, he had a tumor the size of a tennis ball in the middle of his face and short, twisted legs. Surgeons removed the tumor and made him a new nose from one of his toes. Amazingly, he survived—with a face that would never be the same. Strangers stared at him. Kids called him names, and adults could be cruel, too. Everybody seemed to agree that he was “ugly.” But Robert refused to let his face define him. He played pranks, got into trouble, had adventures with his big family, and finally found a sport that was perfect for him to play. And Robert came face to face with the biggest decision of his life, he followed his heart. This poignant memoir about overcoming bullying and thriving with disabilities shows that what makes us “ugly” also makes us who we are. It features a reflective foil cover and black-and-white illustrations throughout.

Am I Ugly written by Michelle Elman and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-07-12 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

In today's world of supplements, celebrity diets and social media, it's very easy to be hard on ourselves about the way we look. With all this pressure to strive for 'perfection' aesthetically, it is easy to forget how damaging this can be psychologically. Michelle Elman is a leading part of the body positivity movement that has been gathering momentum to liberate people from these unrealistic standards, recognise that all bodies are equally valuable and broaden the billboard definitions of beauty. Am I Ugly? is this inspiring woman's compelling and deeply personal memoir that describes her childhood experiences of life-threatening health problems, long stays in hospital and fifteen complex surgeries that left her scarred, both mentally and physically. The narrative follows Michelle's journey from illness to health, and from childhood to adulthood as she deals with her body-confidence issues to embrace both her scars and her body – and help others to do the same. This remarkable book grapples with the wider implications of Michelle's experiences and the complex interplay between beauty and illness. 'Michelle Elman is Bo-Po personified. She shows that we should never hide the things that make us who we are' Curvy Kate. 'A 21-year-old life coach in London has become an Instagram star and viral inspiration after sharing her bikini photos and an inspiring video' Fox News. 'Michelle's post has certainly made an impact on so many people who needed a pick-me-up, and we just hope that anyone else feeling insecure due to clothes sizes somehow find themselves scrolling onto her post, too' Metro.

Perry and Baby Girl are best friends, though you wouldn't know it if you met them. Their friendship is woven from the threads of never-ending dares and power struggles, their loyalty fierce but incredibly fraught. They spend their nights sneaking out of their trailers, stealing cars for joyrides, and doing all they can to appear hard to the outside world. With all their energy focused on deceiving themselves and the people around them, they don't know that real danger lurks: Jamey, an alleged high school student from a nearby town, has been pining after Perry from behind the computer screen in his mother's trailer for some time now, following Perry and Baby Girl's every move—on Facebook, via instant messaging and text, and, unbeknownst to the girls, in person. When Perry and Baby Girl finally agree to meet Jamey face-to-face, they quickly realize he's far from the shy high school boy they thought he was, and they'll do whatever is necessary to protect themselves. Lindsay Hunter's stories have been called "mesmerizing. . . visceral . . . exquisite" (Chicago Tribune), and in Ugly Girls she calls on all her faculties as a wholly original storyteller to deliver the most searing, poignant, powerful debut novel in years.
