In the last few decades, due to the dramatic improvement of the TMR (tunneling magnetoresistance) effect in MTJs (Magnetic Tunnel Junctions), the data storage industry has been revolutionized. There are so many applications based on this technology, e.g.: read head in hard disk drives; magnetic sensors, etc., while its most advanced application nowadays is on the Magnetoresistive Random Access Memory (MRAM), a type of nonvolatile, high speed, high density, yet low power consumption memory - often termed the "universal memory" [1]. For most applications, magnetic tunnel junctions are fabricated with thin film technologies. In industry, they are mostly deposited by magnetron sputtering for mass production purposes. While in research laboratories, MBE (Molecular Beam Epitaxy), PLD (Pulsed Laser Deposition), and E-beam (Electron beam physical vapor deposition) are often used to deposit well-controlled, high quality layers. The very core component of an MRAM cell is an MTJ, which possesses the desired TMR effect. An MTJ basically consists two ferromagnetic materials separated by a thin insulator. Typically, the connection across the insulating layer is what we call a junction, and the layer is usually a few nanometers thick, which ensures that the junction is thin enough to let the electrons tunnel from one side of the insulator to the other. This is a purely quantum mechanical phenomenon and will be forbidden in classical physics because classically an insulator cannot conduct. In this thesis, we demonstrated the epitaxial growth of the tunnel junctions FeCo/MgO/EuS/Ti on MgO-buffered Si (100) wafers, and showed that TMR in these junction reaches up to 64% at 4.2K. We also discovered how different thicknesses of MgO and measurement temperatures affect the TMR of these junctions. We then optimized the growth conditions of the junctions, and used XPS (X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy) to analyze their chemical characteristic features. The best TMR occurring at 1nm MgO thickness is a result of the competition between symmetry enhancement through MgO, and thickness induced multistep hopping.

Using spin to replace or augment the role of charge in signal processing devices, computing systems and circuits may improve speed, power consumption, and device density in some cases—making the study of spinone of the fastest-growing areas in micro- and nanoelectronics. With most of the literature on the subject still highly advanced and heavily theoretical, the demand for a practical introduction to the concepts relating to spin has only now been filled. Explains effects such as giant magnetoresistance, the subject of the 2007 Nobel Prize in physics Introduction to Spintronics is an accessible, organized, and progressive presentation of the quantum mechanical concept of spin. The authors build a foundation of principles and equations underlying the physics, transport, and dynamics of spin in solid state systems. They explain the use of spin for encoding qubits in quantum logic processors; clarify how spin-orbit interaction forms the basis for certain spin-based devices such as spintronic field effect transistors; and discuss the effects of magnetic fields on spin-based device performance. Covers active hybrid spintronic devices, monolithic spintronic devices, passive spintronic devices, and devices based on the giant magnetoresistance effect The final chapters introduce the burgeoning field of spin-based reversible logic gates, spintronic embodiments of quantum computers, and other topics in quantum mechanics that have applications in spintronics. An Introduction to Spintronics provides the knowledge and understanding of the field needed to conduct independent research in spintronics.

The ability to understand and control the unique properties of interfaces has created an entirely new field of magnetism which already has a profound impact in technology and is providing the basis for a revolution in electronics. The last decade has seen dramatic progress in the development of magnetic devices for information technology but also in the basic understanding of the physics of magnetic nanostructures. This volume describes thin film magnetic properties and methods for characterising thin film structure topics that underpin the present 'spintronics' revolution in which devices are based on combined magnetic materials and semiconductors. Volume IV deals with the fundamentals of spintronics: magnetoelectronic materials, spin injection and detection, micromagnetics and the development of magnetic random access memory based on GMR and tunnel junction devices. Together these books provide readers with a comprehensive account of an exciting and rapidly developing field. The treatment is designed to be accessible both to newcomers and to experts already working in this field who would like to get a better understanding of this very diversified area of research.

Magnetic and spintronic materials are ubiquitous in modern technological applications, e.g. in electric motors, power generators, sensors and actuators, not to mention information storage and processing. Medical technology has also greatly benefited from magnetic materials – especially magnetic nanoparticles – for therapy and diagnostics methods. All of the above-mentioned applications rely on the properties of the materials used. These properties in turn depend on intrinsic and extrinsic material parameters. The former are related to the actual elements used and their properties, e.g. atomic magnetic moment and exchange interaction between atoms; the latter are related to the structural and microstructural properties of the materials used, e.g. their crystal structure, grain size, and grain boundary phases. Focusing on state-of-the-art magnetic and spintronic materials, this book will introduce readers to a range of related topics in Physics and Materials Science. Phenomena and processes at the nanoscale are of particular importance in this context; accordingly, much of the book addresses such topics.
