Excerpt from Grundzuge der Vergleichenden Anatomie In den vorliegenden Grundzugen unternahm ich eine Darstellung der Organisationsverhaltnisse der Thiere, wie solche aus einer vergleichenden Betrachtung sich entwickeln lasst. Ich habe dabei versucht aus der Masse sich fast taglich mehr haufenden anatomischen Details das Planmassige im Baue des Thierleibes herauszulosen, und die den Typus formenden, unter gar vielgestaltiger Hulle geborgenen Grundideen der Erscheinungen uberall, wo es anging, in den Vordergrund zu stellen. Aus diesem mehr auf Verarbeitung des vorhandenen als auf Beifuhrung neuen Materials abzielenden Plane leitete sich die Darstellung ab, und es konnten aus demselben Grunde die Einzel beobachtungen nur in beschrankter Weise erwahnt werden. Namentlich mussten die mehr isolirten, in ihrer Tragweite noch nicht abzuschatzenden Thatsachen gegen die Zu einem harmonischen Ganzen sich fugenden zuruckstehen. Da aber bei der Natur des Gegenstandes dem Lernenden durch eine mehr abstracte oder doch allzusehr generalisirende Darstellungsweise der sichere Boden des Thatsachlichen nicht entruckt werden durfte, musste auch dahin gestrebt werden, die Anschauung durch Eingehen in das Reale des Organbaues lebendig zu halten und auch durch bildliche Darstellung zu heben. Fur die Bereitwilligkeit, mit der der geehrte Herr Verleger sich zur Beigabe von Holzschnitten verstand, sei ihm hier mein Dank ausgesprochen. Von den bisher ublichen Dispositionen des zu behandelnden Stoffes habe ich abweichen zu mussen geglaubt, und will mich hier zu rechtfertigen versuchen.
