El franquismo nació con una visión alternativa a la que había propuesto la II República. La naturaleza política del régimen repercutió directamente en la producción historiográfica, y los historiadores de la época quedaron marcados por un hecho traumático, la Guerra Civil, que les obligó a llevar a cabo una lectura forzada de la Historia, especialmente de algunas etapas históricas. Este trabajo trata de revisar el hipotético calado nacionalista que se arroga a la totalidad de la producción historiográfica posterior a la Guerra Civil, circunscribiendo su análisis de estudio a las dos primeras décadas de la dictadura. Para ello, se analiza el grado en que las Historias generales de España presentan una visión unidireccional del pasado histórico español (la cual responda a los principios ideológicos del régimen), así como el papel que se arroga a Cataluña en el proceso de formación de España como ente nacional unido y cohesionado. En este sentido, hemos querido observar si a Cataluña, considerada como una región netamente española, se le asignan una serie de rasgos particulares que se estiman legítimos, si se la contempla como una región históricamente insolidaria e individualista, o si el papel que ha desempeñado en la construcción de España es tenido como de segundo orden frente al de otras regiones que, como Castilla, han sido normalmente consideradas como el núcleo a través del cual se ha formado el alma nacional.
