PREFACIO Me siento honrado de que me hayan pedido escribir el prefacio de esta obra. Considero que la educación médica continúa siendo el mejor vehículo para mejorar la calidad de atención de nuestros pacientes, y que un grupo de académicos del continente americano hayan decidido concentrar todos los aspectos de la salud cardiovascular (o su mayoría) en una sola obra, y que lo hagan convocando a investigadores de habla hispana, es un mérito en sí mismo, ya que no existe una obra comparable en la literatura en español. En nuestra experiencia, el idioma continúa siendo una barrera en la comunicación científica. Como editor de la JACC (Journal of the American College of Cardiology), junto a mi equipo emprendimos la tarea de traducir artículos destacados a idiomas con gran volumen de lectores: español, chino y portugués. La edición de la JACC en español, de la mano del profesor Bayés de Luna, se transformó rápidamente en una herramienta de elección para el hispanoparlante. Por esto es por lo que aplaudo la llegada de este primer Texto de Cardiología enteramente pensado y escrito en español, para la comunidad hispanoparlante de nuestro continente. El Texto de Cardiología, o como simplemente le llaman sus autores, "El libro azul de Cardiología", es un texto que contiene los clásicos tópicos de un texto en la especialidad, pero con dos aspectos que debieran ser destacados: Abarca las complicaciones cardiovasculares de las patologías regionales altamente prevalentes en el continente americano, como son la enfermedad de Chagas o más recientemente, el Zika, por solo nombrar dos. Estas patologías en este libro cobran relevancia natural. Cubre los grandes desafíos que la región enfrenta para controlar los factores de riesgo universales como la hipertensión arterial o las dislipemias aportando la visión latinoamericana, las barreras para el acceso a la salud de la región, las limitaciones propias de países con bajo presupuesto en salud y los mapas de acción para los próximos 25 años. La Sociedad Interamericana de Cardiología es una sociedad que reúne a todas las sociedades del continente americano y el Caribe. En ella se agrupan investigadores y académicos de distinta extracción, niveles de entrenamiento y visión de futuro. Ese aspecto ecléctico se refleja en el "Libro azul", lo cual lo hace muy atractivo para los estudiantes de Medicina, residentes, fellows , personal de enfermería, internistas y cardiólogos que deseen reactualizarse en la especialidad.
