counterinsurgency punctuated by moments of heady excitement and terror. Colonel Grau, the editor and translator, has added his own commentary to produce a useful guide for commanders to meet the challenges of this kind of war and to help keep his fellow soldiers alive. This book will also be of interest to the historian and general reader, who will discover that advances in technology have had little impact on this kind of war, and that many of the same tactics the British Army used on the Northwest Frontier still apply today.

When she was a girl, Lisa See spent summers in the cool, dark recesses of her family`s antiques store in Los Angeles' Chinatown. There, her grandmother and great-aunt told her intriguing, colourful stories about their family`s past - stories of missionaries, concubines, tong wars, glamorous nightclubs, and the determined struggle to triumph over racist laws and discrimination. They spoke of how Lisa`s great-great-grandfather emigrated from his Chinese village to the United States, and how his son followed him. As an adult, See spent fives years collecting the details of her family`s remarkable history. She interviewd nearly one hundred relatives and pored over documents at the National Archives, the immigration office, and in countless attics, basements, and closets for the initmate nuances of her ancestors` lives. The result is a vivid, sweeping family portriat that is att once particular and universal, telling the story not only of one family, but of the Chinese people in America - and of America itself, a country that both welcomes and reviles its immigrants like no other culture in the world.

Soldiers Serving The Nation written by Gordon R. Sullivan and has been published by Army this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995 with Art categories.

Soldiers Serving the Nation, like its companion volume Portrait of an Army (1991), highlights a representative cross-section from the more than 15,000 pieces of military art in the Army Art Collection, consisting of paintings, drawings, sketches, watercolors, and other media. The selected images provide a powerful record of an Army on the move by focusing on the individual Soldier meeting the nation's needs wherever and whenever required. The artists have captured that sense of duty and personal commitment in portraits and scenes, recording conditions, people, and things that have shaped the Soldier's life. The result is a distilling of experience and emotions, of conditions and places, and of courage and hard work, as rendered in images that move from the particular moment to what has been consistent over time--the long tradition of service rooted in the dedication and inner strength of each Soldier.

Twenty years old when he entered the army in 1942, Leo Bogart was one of sixteen million Americans who served with the armed forces during World War II. Over the next four years he, and perhaps the nation, came of age. In numerous letters home, he provided a glimpse into the mind of a young American intellectual whose wartime journey carried him from New York to Germany and from adolescence to experience of the world's complexities. As shown by the letters and the narrative that fills in the gaps between them, the war engaged him, as it did many others, long before he put on a uniform. After a stint in the Army Signal Corps' enlisted reserve, he was inducted into active duty and assigned to the ASTP (Army Specialized Training Program) after which he was assigned to Signal Intelligence. The war presented him with a continually changing cast of characters and led him from a series of peculiar experiences with the vast military institution to the battle for Europe and finally to troubling confrontations with the defeated enemy. In 1946 Bogart was honorably discharged and, like millions of veterans, awarded a small gilt lapel pin bearing the stylized head of an eagle, nicknamed "the ruptured duck." The Second World War has been much celebrated in fiction and film portraying perilous exploits, death-defying bravery, and incessant action. But much of war involves inaction and boredom, stupid error as well as intrepid ingenuity. By showing how life moved from hour to hour and day by day, Bogart's running record illuminates some small homely aspects of the war that cannot be found in military histories focused on the marshaling of forces, the capture of cities, and the casualty counts.
