The Special Operations Executive was one of the most secretive organizations of the Second World War, its activities cloaked in mystery and intrigue. The fate, therefore, of many of its agents was not revealed to the general public other than the bare details carved with pride upon the headstones and memorials of those courageous individuals. Then in 2003, the first batch of SOE personal files was released by the National Archive. Over the course of the following years more and more files were made available. Now, at last, it is possible to tell the stories of all those agents that died in action. These are stories of bravery and betrayal, incompetence and misfortune, of brutal torture and ultimately death. Some died when their parachutes failed to open, others swallowed their cyanide capsules rather than fall into the hands of the Gestapo, many died in combat with the enemy, most though were executed, by hanging, by shooting and even by lethal injection. The bodies of many of the lost agents were never found, destroyed in the crematoria of such places as Buckenwald, Mauthausen and Natzweiler, others were buried where they fell. All of them should be remembered as having undertaken missions behind enemy lines in the knowledge that they might never return.

The men and women who served as agents of the World War 2 Special Operations Executive were courageous. But courage was not enough. They also needed to learn the caution and suspicion that might just keep them alive, deep undercover in enemy territory. Guardians of Churchill's Secret Army tell the stories of the extraordinary men who taught them those skills and thought processes. They helped trainee agents learn how to seem innocuous while preparing resistance, subversion and sabotage. Each spoke several languages. Many became agents themselves and faced danger with great bravery; that's part of their story too. All played a crucial role in the global effort to undermine the enemy. History has been kind to Winston Churchill, yet his many shortcomings have been glossed over by time. This book takes a look at some of those misadventures with a 21st-century point of view and brings to life the story of someone difficult to understand, yet easy to love and hate simultaneously. Overflowing with contradiction Churchill openly wished Mahatma Gandhi starved to death, yet befriended Joseph Stalin - a man who ordered the deaths of 20 million of his own citizens. Inside The Incredible Life and Legacy of Winston Churchill we pursue these and other interesting, but lesser known facets of a man whose life seemed empty when a conflict was not present and thrived when defeat was almost certain. This is Winston Churchill.

When France fell to the Nazis in 1939, Churchill declared that Britain would resist the advance of the German army-alone if necessary. Churchill commanded the Special Operations Executive to secretly develop of a very special kind of military unit that would operate on their own initiative deep behind enemy lines. The units would be licensed to kill, fully deniable by the British government, and a ruthless force to meet the advancing Germans. The very first of these "butcher-and-bolt" units-the innocuously named Maid Honour Force-was led by Gus March-Phillipps, a wild British eccentric of high birth, and an aristocratic, handsome, and bloodthirsty young Danish warrior, Anders Lassen. Amped up on amphetamines, these assorted renegades and sociopaths undertook the very first of Churchill's special operations--a top-secret, high-stakes mission to seize Nazi shipping in the far-distant port of Fernando Po, in West Africa. Though few of these early desperadoes survived WWII, they took part in a series of fascinating, daring missions that changed the course of the war. It was the first stirrings of the modern special-ops team, and all of the men involved would be declared war heroes when it was all over. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare focuses on a dozen of these extraordinary men, weaving their stories of brotherhood, comradely, and elite soldiering into a gripping narrative yarn, from the earliest missions to Anders Larssen's tragic death, just weeks before the end of the war.

The wartime adventures of the legendary SOE agent Harry Rée, told in his own words A school teacher at the start of the war, Harry Rée renounced his former pacifism with the fall of France in 1940. He was deployed into a secret branch of the British army and parachuted into central France in April 1943. Harry showed a particular talent for winning the confidence of local resisters, and guided them in a series of dramatic sabotage operations, before getting into a hand-to-hand fight with an armed German officer, from which he was lucky to escape. This might seem like a romantic story of heroism and derring-do, but Harry Rée's own war writings, superbly edited and contextualized by his son, the philosopher Jonathan Rée, are far more nuanced, shot through with doubts, regrets, and grief.

Do you wonder how the past affects today’s violent conflict? Tragic turmoil in Sudan and South Sudan reminds us how fragile peace can be. Sudanese civil wars were not ended by formation of a new state. Violence has continued in South Sudan and we see today that the North is by no means peaceful. Current politics matter. Yet the origins of today’s violence stretch back into past centuries. And much of Sudanese history has been about intervention and domination by foreigners. By telling the stories of some of these outsiders, Divided by History digs out the historical roots of Sudanese conflicts. Along the way, we meet - The 2,300 BC pioneer who braved the dangers of Egypt’s 'Wild South’ - The ambitious Albanian 'Turk’ who connived his way to becoming ruler of Egypt and Sudan - The devout Christian who was sent to relieve a besieged city - and gave his life - The meticulous general whose superior weaponry proved an unstoppable force - The adventurers, soldiers and even Olympic oarsmen who ruled a vast land while still young And we recognise the difficulty of escaping from our past and the importance of understanding it.
