Varios personajes de la España de los siglos XIX y XX aparecen en la literatura inglesa, sobre todo en los libros de viajeros británicos, irlandeses y norteamericanos, con determinados perfiles literarios que los convierten en característicos, sin por ello llegar a resultar estereotipados o monolíticos. El presente libro analiza en especial la imagen literaria del guardia civil, y la de otros personajes que aparecen en los relatos de viajeros por España escritos en lengua inglesa entre 1844 y 1994. A través del estudio de un corpus compuesto por más de quinientas obras, se intenta reflejar una imagen del guardia civil compartida en el ámbito anglosajón. Además, se presenta dicha visión de la Benemérita contrastada con otras figuras que han ido poblando el paisaje español a lo largo de distintas épocas, como el bandolero, el gitano, el contrabandista, el turista o el carabinero. La imagen de éstos está mediatizada por los prejuicios personales, nacionales o ideológicos del viajero que narra, por su clase social, por su economía particular o por su conocimiento de la lengua y la cultura española.

What do works of art teach us from their period of creation? What do they teach us about human interaction, about social groups? The Council of Europe is a key player in the fight to respect the rights and equal treatment of Roma and Travellers. As such, it implements various actions aimed at combating discrimination: facilitating the access of Roma and Travellers to public services and justice; giving visibility to their history, culture and languages; and ensuring their participation in the different levels of decision making. Another aspect of the Council of Europe’s work is to improve the wider public’s understanding of Roma and their place in Europe. Knowing and understanding Roma and Travellers, their customs, their professions, their history, their migration and the laws affecting them are indispensable elements for interpreting the situation of Roma and Travellers today and understanding the discrimination they face. This book explores the textual and semiotic construction of early modern English identities. To this end, the contributors - scholars from various European universities - address a diversity of literary and non-literary, visual and written, texts from the 16th and 17th centuries, such as plays, pamphlets, travel narratives, dictionaries and emblematic literature, in order to determine how the textual and semiotic (re)production of strangers (be they Muslim, Black or Catholic) in these texts actively participates in the early modern shaping of English identities. In 1934 Sir Peter Chalmers Mitchell retired at the age of seventy from a distinguished career as Secretary of the Zoological Society of London. He moved to Málaga and spent his time writing his memoirs. Then came the fascist uprising of 1936. While most other British residents fled to Gibraltar, Sir Peter stayed put in order to protect his "house and servants". When the Italian forces supporting the rebellion took Málaga, Sir Peter was arrested together with Arthur Koestler, to whom he'd provided a safe haven. The arresting officer was Luis Bolín, Franco's chief propagandist, who had vowed that if he ever laid his hands on Koestler he would "shoot him like a dog". This is Sir Peter's memoir of that period, first published in 1938.
