Religioso dell'ordine dei Teatini, filosofo e matematico, teorico senza l'esperienza del disegno, Guarini si accosta alla pratica del costruire da una parte attraverso i libri e le letture, dall'altra con i viaggi e i soggiorni nelle case del proprio ordine, che da Modena lo portano a Roma, a Venezia, in Sicilia, a Parigi e in Francia, infine per un più lungo periodo a Torino, con puntate ancora nel Veneto, in Emilia e a Milano. Guarini fonde architettura e geometria, e inventa i suoi straordinari spazi introducendo nella prassi italiana tecniche costruttive derivanti dall'Europa del Nord, come la stereotomia o le strutture a nervature di origine gotica. La percezione visiva diviene, con Guarini, elemento determinante dell'architettura, così come il rapporto tra lo spazio e la luce, dando vita a organismi completamente inediti come la chiesa di San Lorenzo o, sempre a Torino, Palazzo Carignano, vero prototipo della dimora primcipesca. Questo volume, originato dal seminario organizzato nel 2002 dal Centro Internazionale di Studi di Architettura Andrea Palladio e sostenuto dalla Compagnia di San Paolo, costituisce la riflessione più completa e aggiornata sull'opera di questo grande architetto, grazie al contributo scientifico dei più importanti studiosi e dei migliori specialisti.
