After thirty years of military rule and state-sponsored violence, Guatemala reinstated civilian control and began rebuilding democratic institutions in 1986. Responding to these changes, Guatemalan women began organizing to gain an active role in the national body politic and restructure traditional relations of power and gender. This pioneering study examines the formation and evolution of the Guatemalan women's movement and assesses how it has been affected by, and has in turn affected, the forces of democratization and globalization that have transformed much of the developing world. Susan Berger pursues three hypotheses in her study of the women's movement. She argues that neoliberal democratization has led to the institutionalization of the women's movement and has encouraged it to turn from protest politics to policy work and to helping the state impose its neoliberal agenda. She also asserts that, while the influences of dominant global discourses are apparent, local definitions of femininity, sexuality, and gender equity and rights have been critical to shaping the form, content, and objectives of the women's movement in Guatemala. And she identifies a counter-discourse to globalization that is slowly emerging within the movement. Berger's findings vigorously reveal the manifold complexities that have attended the development of the Guatemalan women's movement.

The Long Night Of White Chickens written by Francisco Goldman and has been published by Grove/Atlantic, Inc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-12-01 with Fiction categories.

This acclaimed novel by the Pulitzer Prize–finalist is “at once a story about a boy growing up in two cultures, a love story, and a mystery” (The Boston Globe). Winner of the Sue Kaufman Prize for First Fiction, The Long Night of White Chickens announced Francisco Goldman’s arrival as a major literary talent. It is both a suspenseful mystery and a tale of two worlds that plumbs the darkest depths of the relationship between the United States and Guatemala. Goldman tells the story of Roger Graetz, raised in a Boston suburb by an aristocratic Guatemalan mother and Jewish father, and Flor de Mayo, the beautiful young Guatemalan orphan who lives with the family as a maid. Similar in age, Roger and Flor become close, and remain so even after she leaves to attend college at Wellesley. After graduation, however, Flor returns home to Guatemala City, where she heads a local orphanage that arranges international adoptions. When she’s murdered, Roger is stunned and can’t believe the rumors he hears about her life. Years later, he travels to Guatemala to uncover the circumstances around Flor’s mysterious death in this “wonderful book” that is as “complex as history, funny as love, painful as death” (The Washington Post Book World). “A richly layered, genre-busting novel that shuttles between suburban Boston and Guatemala City and devours everything in its path.” —Jay McInerney, author of Bright Lights, Big City

First published in 1999. Guatemalan immigration is part of a trend where more women in an increasing number of countries than men participate in transnational migration. This research attempts to clarify the causes for this phenomenon. First, it evaluates which Guatemalan women initiators and pioneers in the decision to migrate. Second, it looks at women's diverse reasons for leaving Guatemala, and third, what are the conditions particular to women left behind? This study will also contribute to an understanding of the increasing diversification of the Latin American immigrant population in the United States.
