¿Tenía la noción de yihad poco arraigo en al-Andalus? ¿Era la sociedad andalusí poco receptiva a la ideología de guerra santa? Desde una novedosa propuesta metodológica y conceptual para el estudio de la violencia sacralizada en el islam, y desde el análisis sistemático de una variedad de fuentes que van de crónicas a epístolas, pasando por algunos manuscritos árabes inéditos, este libro aporta nuevas respuestas a estas preguntas que han generado un importante debate historiográfico. Para ello, se han estudiado los discursos de guerra santa -tanto colectivos como individuales, y tanto textuales como rituales- que se pusieron en marcha en al-Andalus en los siglos X-XIII, desde ?Abd al-Rahman III a los califas almohades, y se ha examinado qué papel desempeñó en ellos el recuerdo de las primeras batallas del islam, las llevadas a cabo por el profeta Muhammad y los primeros gobernantes musulmanes. Asimismo, se hace especial hincapié en el carácter de herramientas legitimación que ambas realidades ?yihad y memoria? tuvieron, y en cómo la sociedad andalusí fue receptiva a ellas. En este sentido, un análisis de la guerra santa como el que aquí presentado ?es decir, contextualizado?, en el que esta se revela como un discurso de poder que se activa, desactiva, adapta y cambia de forma interesada, y mediante el cual se legitima y justifica la violencia y se construye autoridad, permite dejar atrás tópicos esencialistas como los que describen al islam como una religión de naturaleza violenta.
