A história militar de Portugal é tão longa quanto a história do país, antes do surgimento do estado português independente. Antes do surgimento de Portugal, entre os séculos IX e XII, seu território fazia parte de importantes conflitos militares - resultado principalmente de três processos. O conflito entre Roma antiga e Cartago pelo domínio do mar Mediterrâneo ocidental ocorreu principalmente na Península Ibérica (Hispânia Romana) durante a Segunda Guerra Púnica, de 218 a 201 a.C. A conquista romana da Hispânia, um longo processo de 218 a.C. (no contexto da Segunda Guerra Púnica) a 17 a.C. (já durante o imperador Augusto), teve três grandes confrontos em relação ao território português moderno: A Guerra Lusitana de 155 a 139 a.C., entre os romanos e os lusitanos, nomeadamente durante o período em que estes foram liderados por Viriatus. A expedição e conquista de Gallaecia (norte de Portugal e Galiza), de 135 e 132 a.C., liderada pelo cônsul Decimus Junius Brutus Callaicus. As guerras cantábricas de 29 a 19 a.C., no último estádio da conquista romana, que, embora não sejam dirigidas às populações do atual território português, envolveram muito movimentos militares no que hoje é o norte de Portugal. As guerras civis republicanas romanas que ocorreram, total ou parcialmente, na Hispânia, ainda que em interação e conexão com o processo de conquista, a saber: A revolta de Sertório na Hispânia, de 83 a 72 a.C., sob a liderança de Sertório. A Guerra Civil de César, de 49 a 45 a.C., entre Júlio César e os ótimos (republicanos conservadores), inicialmente liderados por Pompeu. As invasões durante o período de migração e o declínio do Império Romano , no início do século V, e os subsequentes conflitos entre conquistadores (até o século VIII), a saber: Invasão de Roman Gallaecia pelo suebi germânico (Quadi e Marcomanni ) sob o rei Hermeric, acompanhado pelo Buri em 409. Invasão de Hispania pelos germânicos Vandals (Silingi - criada em Baetica e Hasdingi - criada em interior Gallaecia, perto do Suebi) eo Sarmatian alanos (criada em Roman Lusitânia), em 409. Invasão da Hispânia pelos visigodos germânicos liderados pelo rei Teodorico, expandindo-se da Aquitânia e sob solicitação dos romanos, em 410, estabelecendo o Reino Visigótico da Hispânia. A guerra entre os Suevi e os vândalos Hasdingi, onde os primeiros resistiram com a ajuda romana, em 419. A guerra entre os alanos e os suevos e romanos, onde os dois últimos foram derrotados na Batalha de Mérida, em 428. A guerra entre os visigodos e a aliança vandalismo-alanica, que terminou em 429, com a maioria dos vândalos e alanos se mudando para o norte da África. As contínuas e dinâmicas disputas dinásticas entre os Suevi. A guerra contínua entre os suevos e os visigodos, que terminou quando o rei visigodo Liuvigild conquistou o reino dos suebi em 585. A guerra entre o Reino Visigótico da Hispânia e o Império Bizantino na província ibérica da Espanha, no sul, de 552 a 624. A guerra dinástica e civil no Reino Visigótico entre os partidários de Achila II (controlando a maior parte da Hispânia oriental) e Roderic (controlando a maior parte da Península Ibérica). A Reconquista começou como uma insurgência nas Astúrias em 722. Atualmente, historiadores e arqueólogos geralmente concordam que o norte de Portugal, entre os rios Minho e Douro, manteve uma parcela significativa de sua população, na área social e política cristã que até o final do século IX existia. não havia poderes políticos em exercício. No entanto, no final do século IX, a região faz parte de uma estrutura de poderes, as estruturas de poder galegas - asturianas , leonenses e portuguesas. O condado de Portugal cresceu lentamente em poder e território, formando um Reino separado de Portugal. que se expandiu às custas dos estados mouros de Al-Andalus, terminando sua Reconquista em 1249. O condado de Portugal cresceu lentamente no poder e suas contagens começaram a se chamar duques, um dos quais se tornou regente do Reino de Leão entre 999 e 1008. Em 1070, o conde português Nuno Mendes desejou o título português e a Batalha de Pedroso foi travada em 18 de fevereiro de 1071, o conde foi morto em combate liderado por Garcia II da Galiza . Depois anexou o condado e passou a se chamar rei de Portugal e da Galiza ( Garcia Rex Portugallie et Galleciae) Os irmãos de Garcia, Sancho II de Castela e Alfonso VI de Leon, uniram e anexaram o Reino de Garcia durante o mesmo ano, que concordaram em dividi-lo entre si; no entanto, o rei de Castille foi morto por um nobre naquele mesmo ano e Alfonso levou Castille para si e para Garcia. recuperou seu reino de Portugal e Galiza, mas em 1073 o Alfonso VI reuniu todo o poder e começou a se denominar Imperator totius Hispaniæ (Imperador de toda a Hispania) desde 1077. Quando o Imperador morreu, a Coroa foi deixada para sua filha Urraca, enquanto Teresa herdou o Condado de Portugal .

From war campaigns to peacekeeping operations, The Portuguese at War presents an overview of the conflicts, wars and revolutions in which Portugal was involved from the nineteenth century to the present day. From the French invasions to the civil wars, from the African Empire to the wars of decolonisation, from belligerence in the First World War to neutrality in the Second, from participation in the Atlantic Alliance to peacekeeping operations in Kosovo, East Timor, Lebanon and Afghanistan. The book addresses the military interventions in politics and the role of the countrys political regimes in military reform: from the Liberal Revolutions to the Republic, from the military dictatorship and authoritarian regime to the 25th of April Revolution and the transition to democracy. The historical record of Portugals war involvement is not only closely aligned to international and European circumstance but to internal factors: the economy, society, public opinion and political/military power. A historical perspective must of necessity link Portuguese war excursions with the military institutions in place at the time: their recruitment system, social composition and organisation of the army, navy and air force; the military ethos; the evolution of equipment, weapons and military technologies; strategic military doctrine and how this impacted on tactics and military operations; and of course the war outcomes. Special attention is given to the effects of international isolation after the Estado Novo, and post-Cold War europeanisation. The book does not eschew the plurality of interpretative theories. Rather, it seeks to combine historical accuracy of the Portuguese at war within a highly readable literary narrative aimed not only at undergraduate and research levels, but at a broader public audience interested in the complex reach and role of Portugal in world history.
