I confini che ci separano gli uni dagli altri sono destinati ad aumentare e farsi piú complessi. Conoscerne la storia e le evoluzioni è il modo migliore per capire le guerre di oggi, dall'Ucraina alla Palestina. Le frontiere, insieme alle architetture che le rendono possibili, ci accompagnano da millenni. E da tempo altrettanto immemore scatenano guerre. Le piú antiche mura erette a scopo difensivo di cui abbiamo testimonianza risalgono a 12 000 anni fa. E poi ancora le fortificazioni di Gerico, di Atene e Costantinopoli, fino ad arrivare ai progetti di scudi spaziali. L'istinto di proteggersi arroccandosi ed erigendo steccati ha dunque radici profonde. I confini però di naturale e istintivo, malgrado siano talvolta segnalati da fiumi o montagne, hanno ben poco. Cosí nel corso delle epoche è di volta in volta mutato il nostro atteggiamento nei loro confronti. Nel 1989, per esempio, quando crollava il muro di Berlino, sembrava che il mondo fosse pronto a diventare uno solo, sulla spinta della globalizzazione degli scambi. Trent'anni dopo gli scambi continuano a essere sempre piú liberi, ma i confini sono rimasti ben saldi sulle carte geografiche, anzi sono persino aumentati. E ovunque, dagli Stati Uniti all'Italia, si parla di difendersi dagli invasori, di costruire nuovi recinti e barriere. Ovunque i confini sono oggetto di strumentalizzazioni volte a risvegliare rigurgiti sovranisti e nazionalisti. E in futuro? Klaus Dodds ci offre un quadro storico e politico dei conflitti di frontiera di oggi e di quelli che verranno. Conflitti relativi a zone da decenni in situazione di stallo; conflitti che incendieranno confini destinati a spostarsi e a mutare geograficamente, a causa del surriscaldamento globale; e conflitti inediti, legati a nuovi spazi di conquista aperti dalla tecnologia. Un quadro che tiene conto da un lato dell'estrema complessità di una materia che è un vero e proprio microcosmo della geopolitica nazionale e internazionale. E dall'altro della necessità sempre piú urgente di sfatare il pericoloso mito della sovranità esclusiva e dell'immutabilità delle frontiere: la necessità di coltivare una visione radicalmente diversa, che tenga conto dei rapidi cambiamenti della Terra e delle migrazioni di massa che si profilano all'orizzonte.

Questo libro muove dal riconoscimento epistemologico dell’incertezza come tratto endemico macroscopico di ogni società umana: l’instabilità quale condizione di una rinnovata “normalità”, che la pandemia di Covid-19 ha esasperato ma non generato. L’opera è concepita tenendo a mente due finalità complementari e almeno in parte sovrapposte: una culturale, l’altra politica. Per quanto attiene al primo aspetto, il lavoro intende esporre il dibattito – non di rado conflittuale – tra scienza, politica, media e società a un pubblico più ampio e articolato di quello composto da chi se ne occupa per contingente necessità o per mestiere. Ciascuno dei cinque capitoli contiene un “classico” del pensiero dei Science Technology and Society Studies ed è preceduto da un’introduzione di registro divulgativo allo scopo di facilitare la metabolizzazione dei contenuti e, per quanto possibile, attualizzarli nel contesto storico e culturale che oggi viviamo. Il secondo dei due fini, quello politico, si manifesta nella scelta di tenere fede alla lezione weberiana circa lo sguardo della sociologia sui fatti del mondo: mantenersi laici e avalutativi sui problemi tra scienza, politica, media e società. Non si tratta però di un’azione facile, né popolare, considerando che siamo nell’era del consenso guadagnato sulle polarizzazioni e le gogne online. Eppure, pare l’unico modo sensato di collocare in prospettiva i temi discussi.

The Hero of Italy examines a salient episode in Italy's Thirty Years' War with Spain and France, whereby the young duke Odoardo Farnese of Parma embraced the French alliance, only to experience defeat and occupation after two tumultuous years (1635-1637). Gregory Hanlon stresses the narrative of events unfolding in northern Italy, examining the participation of the little state in these epic European events. The first chapter describes the constitution of Cardinal Richelieu's anti-Habsburg alliance and Odoardo's eagerness to be part of it. A chapter on the Parman professional army, based on an extraordinary collection of company roster-books, sheds light on the identity of over 13,000 individuals, soldier by soldier, the origin and background of their officers, the conditions of their lodgings, and the good state of their equipment. Chapter three follows the first campaign of 1635 alongside French and Savoyard contingents at the failed siege of Valenza, and the logistical difficulties of organizing such large-scale operations. Another chapter examines the financial expedients the duchy adopted to fend off incursions on all its borders in 1636, and how militia contingents on both sides were drawn into the fighting. A final chapter relates the Spanish invasion and occupation which forced duke Odoardo to make a separate peace. The volume includes a detailed assessment of the impact of war on civilians based on parish registers for city and country. The application of the laws of war was largely nullified by widespread starvation, disease and routine sex-selective infanticide. These quantitative analyses, supported by maps and tables, are among the most detailed anywhere in Europe in the era of the Thirty Years' War.
