O enredo se passa nas margens do Rio São Francisco. Através do personagem atemporal Guerreiro do Velho Chico, o livro convida o leitor a fazer uma viagem no tempo, conhecendo os episódios que aconteceram, tendo como cenário o Velho Chico. A priori, o Guerreiro convive com os índios caetés, a tribo que habitava o sul do litoral pernambucano, todo o litoral alagoano e o norte do litoral sergipano e, portanto, a Foz do Rio São Francisco. Os caetés foram acusados de matar e comer o primeiro bispo do Brasil, Dom Pero Fernandes Sardinha, o que desencadeou a maior chacina indígena da história do país. O livro também aborda a história do surgimento do primeiro núcleo de povoamento do Rio São Francisco, a edificação do Forte Maurício de Nassau, o povoamento do Alto São Francisco propulsionado pelo Ciclo do Ouro, a passagem do Imperador Dom Pedro II pelo Baixo São Francisco e a construção da primeira usina hidrelétrica do Velho Chico. Além disso, apresenta uma pequena biografia de uma lenda viva do Rio, Toinho Pescador, questões ambientais, dentre outras.
