Stavolta il discorso può apparire diverso. Eravamo abituati a libri il cui testo appariva scientifico ma al tempo stesso assai divulgativo. Carlo Pavia ci aveva abituati, con Guida di Roma sotterranea, Guida dei Mitrei di Roma e Nel ventre di Roma, ad un certo rapimento nel leggere i suoi testi, a fantasticare mentre egli descriveva certi ambienti e ad essere accompagnati, se non addirittura trasportati, in essi. Con il suo ultimo lavoro, Guida delle catacombe romane, ci tempesta di informazioni scientifiche, ci consiglia nella visita dei numerosissimi luoghi paleocristiani ma soprattutto ci fa commuovere ammirando i fantastici colori di alcune pitture dell'Ipogeo di via Dino Compagni o sbalordire nel constatare quanta magnificenza si nasconda ancora sotto il piano di calpestio romano. Le sue fotografie sono di una bellezza quasi inconcepibile ma egli, il Maestro, cerca di minimizzare al massimo il suo operato; i suoi testi sono di una chiarezza senza eguali perché egli, lo Scrittore, sa che per portare l'archeologia a tutti occorre esprimersi con semplicità; i suoi argomenti sono sempre avvincenti perché egli, il Ricercatore, sa cosa attira il pubblico lettore. Lasciamoci dunque trasportare dai suoi libri perché, comodamente seduti in poltrona, sembra sia solo questo, per ora, il modo di accedere in quegli ambienti così sapientemente documentati dalla fotocamera e dalla penna di Carlo Pavia. Le catacombe romane, così come i tituli rappresentano la più concreta testimonianza della prima cristianità, quella vera, quella seriamente sentita con il cuore e con l'anima. È con i sentimenti che scaturiscono da quei primi secoli che Carlo Pavia ha documentato i luoghi di questo libro, e ha fatto sì che noi ne potessimo gioire. Ne risulta una indagine fantastica condotta più nel tempo che nello spazio puntando l'attenzione sul legame tra la Roma pagana e quella cristiana, in una sorta di continuità dal sacro valore che le accomuna. Non si può, alla fine della lettura, non provare un senso di viva emozione per aver potuto respirare l'atmosfera di tanti luoghi in cui le figure dei martiri si sono avvicendate testimoniando, quasi sempre con la propria vita, la loro fede. Karl Muller da Profilo di un autore Carlo Pavia, nato a Frosinone il 01-04-1955, prima ancora di completare gli studi classici ed universitari ha incominciato ad occuparsi con successo di fotografia applicata all’archeologia diventando fotografo professionista nel 1975. Da allora ha seguitato ad interessarsi con passione delle antichità romane fino ad arrivare alla laurea in Storia dell’Arte Antica con specializzazione in Archeologia e Topografia Antica. Le sue conferenze ed i suoi lavori lo hanno fatto conoscere ed apprezzare nell’ambiente scientifico. E’ autore di numerose opere sui monumenti antichi di Roma. Tra le più importanti vanno segnalate: “Le Mura Aureliane”, “I Mitrei di Ostia antica”, “Il culto dei Morti”, “I Mercati Traianei,, dall’Emiciclo alla Torre delle Milizie”, “Il Plastico di Roma Antica”, “Roma sotterranea e segreta”, “L’Opus sectile romano”, “Il culto dei Morti”, “Roma Mitraica”, “Il Labirinto delle Catacombe”, “Le origini di Venezia”, “Roma, la città sotterranea”, “Guida di Roma sotterranea”, “Nel ventre di Roma”, “Guida dei Mitrei di Roma antica”, “Guida delle catacombe romane”, “Curiosità del mondo romano antico”, “Guida archeologica di Roma”, “Roma antica in 3Dimensioni”, “Roma antica, com’era”, ecc. E’ inoltre autore dei films “Un viaggio nella Cloaca Massima”, “Castra Tenebrarum” e il non ancora completato “Ipogei romani”. E’ spesso comparso come ospite di rilievo e come collaboratore per i programmi per la RAI come “GEO” di Folco Quilici, “Il piacere di conoscere”, “Colosseum”, “Maurizio Costanzo Show”, “Uno mattina” ed altri oltre a collaborare per le più importanti televisioni estere. Egli non è solo scrittore e documentarista; la sua attività è quella di archeospeleofotosub (archeologo laureato, speleologo brevettato, fotografo professionista e sub pluribrevettato). Hanno scritto di lui frasi encomiabili, puntualmente pubblicate, le più grandi firme della critica letteraria, da Mario Verdone a Fabien Paris, da Fabio Isman a Carlo Carletti, da Fabrizio Carbone a Karl Muller. E' stato fondatore e Direttore della rivista di Archeologia FORMA VRBIS e dell'Associazione Culturale LUPA (che prende il nome dalle iniziali dei due fondatori, Lucignani e Pavia). Fondatore e Presidente del G.S.U. Lu.Pa. (il Gruppo di Speleologia Urbana che prende il nome dalle iniziali dei due fondatori, Lunardo e Pavia), ancora oggi, a distanza di alcuni decenni, effettua sopralluoghi nelle viscere della Capitale. Attualmente cura totalmente, essendone unico autore, la rivista-mensile di archeologia “Roma e il suo impero” mentre, in concomitanza con il festeggiamento del suo cinquantesimo anno di età, si rivolge al suo pubblico nell'insegnamento delle tecniche da sempre usate nei suoi sopralluoghi e nei suoi studi. “Roma antica in 3D” e “Roma com'era” non sono che i primi volumi della serie riguardante il trasferimento al lettore di un bagaglio culturale estremamente concreto di cui egli si è servito in tutta la seconda metà della sua prima esistenza.

The bone gatherers found in the annals and legends of the early Roman Catholic Church were women who collected the bodies of martyred saints to give them a proper burial. They have come down to us as deeply resonant symbols of grief: from the women who anointed Jesus's crucified body in the gospels to the Pietà, we are accustomed to thinking of women as natural mourners, caring for the body in all its fragility and expressing our deepest sorrow. But to think of women bone gatherers merely as mourners of the dead is to limit their capacity to stand for something more significant. In fact, Denzey argues that the bone gatherers are the mythic counterparts of historical women of substance and means-women who, like their pagan sisters, devoted their lives and financial resources to the things that mattered most to them: their families, their marriages, and their religion. We find their sometimes splendid burial chambers in the catacombs of Rome, but until Denzey began her research for The Bone Gatherers, the monuments left to memorialize these women and their contributions to the Church went largely unexamined. The Bone Gatherers introduces us to once-powerful women who had, until recently, been lost to history—from the sorrowing mothers and ghastly brides of pagan Rome to the child martyrs and women sponsors who shaped early Christianity. It was often only in death that ancient women became visible—through the buildings, burial sites, and art constructed in their memory—and Denzey uses this archaeological evidence, along with ancient texts, to resurrect the lives of several fourth-century women. Surprisingly, she finds that representations of aristocratic Roman Christian women show a shift in the value and significance of womanhood over the fourth century: once esteemed as powerful leaders or patrons, women came to be revered (in an increasingly male-dominated church) only as virgins or martyrs—figureheads for sexual purity. These depictions belie a power struggle between the sexes within early Christianity, waged via the Church's creation and manipulation of collective memory and subtly shifting perceptions of women and femaleness in the process of Christianization. The Bone Gatherers is at once a primer on how to "read" ancient art and the story of a struggle that has had long-lasting implications for the role of women in the Church.
