The premise of this volume is that the ubiquity of lactation imagery in early modern visual culture and the discourse on breastfeeding in humanist, religious, medical, and literary writings is a distinct cultural phenomenon that deserves systematic study. Chapters by art historians, social and legal historians, historians of science, and literary scholars explore some of the ambiguities and contradictions surrounding the issue, and point to the need for further study, in particular in the realm of lactation imagery in the visual arts. This volume builds on existing scholarship on representations of the breast, the iconography of the Madonna Lactans, allegories of abundance, nature, and charity, women mystics' food-centered practices of devotion, the ubiquitous practice of wet-nursing, and medical theories of conception. It is informed by studies on queer kinship in early modern Europe, notions of sacred eroticism in pre-tridentine Catholicism, feminist investigations of breastfeeding as a sexual practice, and by anthropological and historical scholarship on milk exchange and ritual kinship in ancient Mediterranean and medieval Islamic societies. Proposing a variety of different methods and analytical frameworks within which to consider instances of lactation imagery, breastfeeding practices, and their textual references, this volume also offers tools to support further research on the topic.

"Tout Paris sera le faubourg Saint-Antoine : point de talent, point de solidité, beaucoup d'intrigues, nulle réalité dans les fortunes, point de confiance qui n'est attachée qu'à un établissement solide". Alors que Turgot propose d'abolir les corporations de métiers en février 1776, les maîtres boutonniers parisiens stigmatisent le faubourg Saint-Antoine et ses artisans. Dans cet espace périphérique constitué au XVIIe siècle, la monarchie a en effet privilégié l'installation d'artisans de tous horizons en dérogeant à l'organisation des communautés de métiers, laissant les coudées franches aux "faux ouvriers" et y autorisant la liberté du travail dès 1657. Ecrire l'histoire d'un espace devenu symbolique ne relève donc pas d'une simple histoire locale. En se posant d'emblée sur les marges, c'est proposer une histoire sociale et économique du monde des métiers parisiens qui tienne davantage compte des lieux de travail privilégiés, des tensions et des complémentarités qu'ils suscitent dans la ville. En choisissant le faubourg Saint-Antoine, c'est chercher à comprendre les dynamiques qui animent les gens de métier et donner une image à la fois plus complexe et plus relative d'un monde du travail trop souvent présenté comme homogène et pacifié à travers la trilogie "apprenti-compagnon-maître". Cela permet aussi de mesurer l'écart entre la liberté théorique et les pratiques des acteurs que tout oppose si l'on s'arrête aux procédures judiciaires ou aux écrits des mémorialistes. Qui sont les artisans du faubourg Saint-Antoine ? Leur liberté consiste-t-elle à innover et à travailler honnêtement ou "à mal faire" ? Lorsque de vrais apprentis se dessinent dans l'ombre des alloués, de vrais maîtres et des jurés des communautés parisiennes dans celle des "faux ouvriers", la diversité des parcours et le choix des possibles interpellent le lecteur. Les affrontements ou les accords avec les maîtres parisiens prennent un autre relief, en particulier les saisies de marchandises. Les trajectoires d'artisans soulignent l'imbrication des espaces, les mêmes tensions et les mêmes solidarités qu'en ville. Tout Paris n'est peut-être pas le faubourg Saint-Antoine, mais le faubourg Saint-Antoine et ses "faux ouvriers" reflètent une grande partie du monde artisanal parisien.
