This book started out as devotionals written weekly for a Sunday school class. I teach a young adult Sunday school class, and I regularly challenge them to develop the discipline of a daily quiet time. In hopes of removing any and all excuses, I provided them with these devotionals. During the week, I would study and write five devotionals, then I would provide these each Sunday. I would explain that they only needed five devotionals because if they came to church on Wednesday and Sunday, that would take care of the other two days. This book is not meant to be any kind of a commentary on the book of Genesis. How I approached this each week was, I read Genesis every day, and I stopped at every place where I received a thought. I would then take out my books on Genesis and study the passage, and I would write a short devotional. My hope for this book has not changed since they were originally written. I still hope these devotionals will inspire you to develop the important discipline of a daily quiet time. Maybe you've read the story about Mary and Martha in Luke 10:38–42. Jesus used three words to describe Martha. He said she was "cumbered" in verse 40. The basic meaning of this word is that Martha was distracted. How easy it is to lose focus on all the important things. He said she was "careful" in verse 41. The basic meaning of this word is that she was anxious. He said she was "troubled" in verse 41. The basic meaning of this word is to be worried to the point of disturbed. How many do these words describe them? Jesus said one thing was needed, and Mary had chosen it. Just sit at Jesus's feet.

Genesis contains a rich, nuanced text, and yet, when taught to children, it is often done through a series of “factoids,” such as the number of animals brought into the ark or Esau’s red lentil soup. Worst still, children are frequently discouraged from asking questions about its complex storylines. This book was written to redress both pedagogical shortcomings. It does so by reminding children that the Bible teaches us to be truly good people via amazing stories of brave men and women doing incredible things. However, the most valuable lessons we learn from the Bible seem to come from people’s daily lives: how they speak to their spouses, how they treat their children, how they interact with their neighbors. Perhaps most importantly, the Bible teaches us to ask questions. At times, the answers to our questions come easily. At other times, the answers we seek are hidden away, and so we are left to think and wonder. Nonetheless, ask we must, because by asking questions, we can deepen our connection to the ones we address the questions to, be it parents, teachers, or even God himself.

It is accessible for readers who want to take the plunge into this old text. It is gentle in leading readers to a critical sense of the text in response to a "late" trauma in Israel. It is imaginative in its articulation of a book that might otherwise be off-putting. The convergence of accessibility, gentleness, and imagination make this a very fine read."- Walter Brueggemann, Professor Emeritus, Columbia Theological Seminary"Genesis for Normal People is the perfect starting point for Christians who want to read the book of Genesis more faithfully and honestly. Enns and Byas break down the history, genre, culture, and context of this fascinating book of the Bible, so that "normal people"--you know, those who can't read ancient Hebrew--can get a better sense of its purpose, meaning and relevance. The authors manage to simplify without dumbing down, challenge without confusing, and dig for deep truth without compromising their intellectual integrity. A must-read for anyone who care enough about the Bible to want to read and understand it on its own terms."- Rachel Held Evans, author of A Year of Biblical Womanhood"The stories in the book of Genesis are among the most well known in the Bible--so much so that it's easy to lose sight of the fact that Genesis is an ancient document from a cultural setting very different from our own. Enns and Byas have provided a highly readable volume that reminds readers of its reality while explaining the meaning and significance of Genesis in light of its ancient context. An ideal book for individual and study groups interested in understanding Genesis on its own terms."- John R. Franke, General Coordinator for The Gospel and Our Culture Network"Evangelical Old Testament scholarship has come of age and is now coming out from behind the shadows of suppression and secrecy. No one represents this fresh coming of age more than Peter Enns, who, with co-author Jared Byas, makes available to any Bible reader a fresh engagement with Genesis--readable, responsible, and recognizably fresh."- Scot McKnight, Professor of New Testament at Northern Seminary

Notice: This is an early-release edition The story of creation, as told in Genesis, has caused more controversy over the past century than any other book of the Bible. This discussion oriented study guide leads the participants past this controversy and into the foundational accounts of the Christian faith. The small group is guided through the Biblical text, leading them to an understanding of what Moses' message meant to the recently freed Israelites that he led out of Egypt as well as to an understanding of what the message means to us today. Insightful questions reveal the interconnection between Genesis and later parts of the Bible and challenge the students to see how the struggles of our forefathers continue to play out in our own lives. The guide serves both mature Christians and those new to the faith with questions that follow Genesis, chronologically, allowing adjustment to the pace of study, depending on the level of discussion generated.
