The broad aim of this thesis, therefore, was to examine the development of shame and guilt from late childhood, across the adolescent transition, and into mid-adolescence. Unfortunately, no single measure existed capable of assessing shame and guilt across these developmental periods. To address this shortfall, the aim of Study One was to assess the vailidity and reliability of the TOSCA-A shame and guilt scales for use with children and young adolescents. Results with 300 children (aged 9-11 years) and 299 adolescents (aged 12-14 years) indicated satisfactory internal consistency, assessed using Cronbach's alpha and mean inter-item correlations. Sound construct validity was demonstrated through significant and moderate correlations between the TOSCA-A shame and guilt scales, and measures of depression and empathy. Lastly, significant and moderate correlations over a 13-month period revealed stability of constructs. Overall, results from Study One provided comprehensive evidence that the TOSCA-A (in its revised form) is a psychometrically sound measure for the assessment of shame and guilt for use both with children and adolescents. Using this measure, Study Two addressed the central aim of this thesis, being to examine the development of shame and guilt from late childhood to mid adolescence. Specifically, Study Two employed a three-year longitudinal-sequential design to examine the developmental trajectory, sex differences, and stability of individual differences in 1348 children and adolescents (aged 9-14 years at time-point one). In contrast to predictions, time and age-group results indicated a gentle decline in shame-proneness, and primarily stability in guilt-proneness. As predicted, girls scored higher on both emotions, however in contrast to predictions, this difference did not become more pronounced over time and with an increase in age. Individual differences in proneness were relatively stable for both emotions, although guilt-proneness became increasingly stable with age. Overall, results indicate a developmental progression of shame and guilt which is characterised by continuity rather than change, and suggest that by adolescence, both shame and guilt are relatively stable affective dispositions. The current thesis fills a void by addressing a neglected area in the shame and guilt literature, and represents an important step in understanding these emotions during this developmental period. Furthermore, limitations and considerations to emerge from this thesis serve to inform directions for future research.
