En la actualidad, dos terceras partes del territorio del Sahara Occidental están ocupadas ilegalmente por Marruecos, donde ha implantado colonos y explota los recursos naturales, mientras cerca de 200.000 saharauis malviven en los campamentos de refugiados en el suroeste de Argelia. Además, desde noviembre de 2020 se han retomado las hostilidades armadas entre el Frente Polisario y Marruecos. Por otra parte, el Sahara Occidental es uno de los grandes temas pendientes de la historia reciente de España. El tardofranquismo entregó su última colonia y a su población a Marruecos, incumpliendo con sus obligaciones y compromisos con Naciones Unidas. Desde entonces, España se ha alineado con el ocupante y ha sido una pieza clave en la impunidad creada. Este libro no pretende recapitular de manera exhaustiva la historia de los saharauis ni es una explicación lineal y clásica del conflicto. Busca dar elementos para entender lo que está ocurriendo, y para ello presenta distintos aspectos de la realidad contemporánea saharaui y muestra cómo sigue siendo una cuestión relevante para España.
