NEW YORK TIMES EDITORS’ CHOICE • A “lyrical” (Chicago Tribune) final work of nonfiction from the National Book Award–winning author of Arctic Dreams and Horizon, a literary icon whose writing, fieldwork, and mentorship inspired generations of writers and activists. “Mesmerizing . . . a master observer . . . whose insight and moral clarity have earned comparisons to Henry David Thoreau.”—The Wall Street Journal ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: Outside ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The New York Times An ardent steward of the land, fearless traveler, and unrivaled observer of nature and culture, Barry Lopez died after a long illness on Christmas Day 2020. The previous summer, a wildfire had consumed much of what was dear to him in his home place and the community around it—a tragic reminder of the climate change of which he’d long warned. At once a cri de coeur and a memoir of both pain and wonder, this remarkable collection of essays adds indelibly to Lopez’s legacy, and includes previously unpublished works, some written in the months before his death. They unspool memories both personal and political, among them tender, sometimes painful stories of his childhood in New York City and California, reports from expeditions to study animals and sea life, recollections of travels to Antarctica and other extraordinary places on earth, and meditations on finding oneself amid vast, dramatic landscapes. He reflects on those who taught him, including Indigenous elders and scientific mentors who sharpened his eye for the natural world. We witness poignant returns from his travels to the sanctuary of his Oregon backyard, adjacent to the McKenzie River. And in prose of searing candor, he reckons with the cycle of life, including his own, and—as he has done throughout his career—with the dangers the earth and its people are facing. With an introduction by Rebecca Solnit that speaks to Lopez’s keen attention to the world, including its spiritual dimensions, Embrace Fearlessly the Burning World opens our minds and souls to the importance of being wholly present for the beauty and complexity of life. “This posthumously published collection of essays by nature writer Barry Lopez reveals an exceptional life and mind . . . While certainly a testament to his legacy and an ephemeral reprieve from his death in 2020, this book is more than a memorial: it offers a clear-eyed praxis of hope in what Lopez calls this ‘Era of Emergencies.’”—Scientific American

America’s national parks are breathing spaces in a world in which such spaces are steadily disappearing, which is why more than 300 million people visit the parks each year. Now Terry Tempest Williams, the author of the environmental classic Refuge and the beloved memoir When Women Were Birds, returns with The Hour of Land, a literary celebration of our national parks, an exploration of what they mean to us and what we mean to them. From the Grand Tetons in Wyoming to Acadia in Maine to Big Bend in Texas and more, Williams creates a series of lyrical portraits that illuminate the unique grandeur of each place while delving into what it means to shape a landscape with its own evolutionary history into something of our own making. Part memoir, part natural history, and part social critique, The Hour of Land is a meditation and a manifesto on why wild lands matter to the soul of America.

Who has ever heard of a gull being afraid of heights? When Arthur was a young chick, too little to fly, he had a terrifying experience that left him afraid of heights. When he was old enough to learn to fly, he watched his sister and brother learn and practice flying about the nest and the nearby ocean. They could swoop and soar in the sky and find their own food. Arthur wanted to join them so badly, but he was just too scared to try. He stayed alone in the nest. One day, a ferocious storm blew the tree with the nest over, and the nest began to break apart. As the nest, with Arthur in it, began to sail through the sky and toward the ground, Arthur had to make a choice. Would he go down with nest, or face his fears and fly?

Gulls аrе usually white wіth black wіngѕ, whіlе hеrrіng gullѕ аrе uѕuаllу whіtе or grау with blасk wіngѕ. The bеѕt wау tо іdеntіfу a gull, hоwеvеr, іѕ to lооk at іtѕ bеаk. Gullѕ have уеllоw beaks, whіlе hеrrіng gullѕ have rеd beaks. Thеrе аrе mаnу tуреѕ оf gulls аrоund thе wоrld, but thе wоrd "gull" is gеnеrаllу used tо refer tо thе blасk bасkеd gull or hеrrіng gull. Thе word "seagull" іѕ used lеѕѕ оftеn аnd uѕuаllу rеfеrѕ to a bіrd that lіvеѕ near thе ѕеа. Gulls аrе interesting сrеаturеѕ аnd аrе knоwn for their іntеllіgеnсе, аеrіаl аbіlіtіеѕ, аnd ѕсаvеngіng hаbіtѕ. Gulls and seagulls hаvе some physical characteristics in common, but thеу also hаvе some dіffеrеnсеѕ. Bоth tуреѕ оf bіrdѕ have fоur wіngѕ, fоr еxаmрlе. Hоwеvеr, gullѕ аrе generally ѕmаllеr than gullѕ, аnd thеіr beak shape is dіffеrеnt. Gullѕ hаvе narrower bеаkѕ thаn seagulls. Fіnаllу, the соlоr оf a seagull's plumage саn vаrу, but seagulls аrе uѕuаllу whіtе оr light gray. Thе herring gull.
