RArefaction waVE guN (RAVEN) propulsion constitutes a novel means to dramatically reduce the recoil momentum and heat imparted to future cannons during firing. The method may be considered a hybrid propulsion technology with features common to both closed-breech cannons and recoilless rifles. Reduction of recoil and gun heating would greatly facilitate large caliber gun integration within light future combat system (FCS) vehicles. Analysis of a RAVEN launcher comparable to the current 120-mm M256 firing an M829 kinetic energy round would impose 75% less recoil momentum and reduce barrel heating at the muzzle by 50%.

We explore the effect of advanced propulsion technologies on the performance potential of a 120-mm high performance cannon. The current 120-mm gun using conventional granular propellant operates at a peak pressure of 505 MPa and accelerates a 7.1 kg saboted projectile with a kinetic energy penetrator to a velocity of 1650 m/s. We predict that performance increases on the order of 25% are possible in theory for the best of the advanced propulsion concepts. In practice a 10 to 15% increase is a more realistic upper limit. The use of a 30% longer gun tube operating at a 15% higher peak breech pressure results in an almost 10% increase in muzzle velocity. Relatively small increases in muzzle velocity such as these can result in significant improvements in overall gun system effectiveness.

The traveling charge(TC)concept is a solid propellant propulsion technique thought by ballisticians to offer the prospect of muzzle exit velocities in the 2-3 km/s range without the high breech pressures required of conventional gun propulsion systems. Previous work has demonstrated that the XNOVAKTC computer code is a reliable tool for simulating TC gun firings when compared to experimental results and it was felt that the code could be used to address realistic questions associated with the TC concept. An important question is how to tailor both the booster and traveling charge to obtain optimized ballistic performance. This study provides guidelines for optimizing gun systems and assessing the applicability of these guidelines to a 14-mm(gun) test fixture. The XNOVAKTC computer code is used to investigate parameters which significantly impact performance. The base study is performed on a hypothetical 14-mm gun with pressure and propellant constraints attainable in this system. A general set of guidelines is developed for optimal performance in the 14-mm gun. Study results, when applied to the 14-mm test fixture at BRL, indicate that the traveling charge effect is real and demonstrable, yielding increased velocities at lower chamber pressures. If the obstacle in timing TC ignition and burnout can be overcome, potential velocity improvements of up to 30% appear possible. (edc).

The Integrated High Payoff Rocket Propulsion Technology Program (IHPRPT) is a structured Government (DoD with NASA) and Industry program to improve U.S. rocket boost and orbit transfer, spacecraft and tactical propulsion systems. The program is technology driven, goal oriented, and application focused. Integration of the technologies developed by the IHPRPT program is accomplished through key demonstrations. These demonstrators are used to verify compliance with goals. The achievement of the IHPRPT goals and the transition to operational systems provide significant payoff as well as a high return on investment. The IHPRPT program is being conducted as a fully coordinated, but not joint, effort. Each agency and Department of Defense component is responsible for funding and managing their respective portions of the effort. The effort is headed by the IHPRPT Steering Committee, which has representatives from each participating agency and service. Industry plays an active role in the program through an involvement in planning, participation at Steering Committee meetings, conducting of technology programs, identification of transition opportunities, advocacy of the program, and teaming. Tactical propulsion is one of the three major application areas. Technologies are being pursued for air, ground, surface and gun launched applications. Component and propulsion system demonstrators are planned for achieving IHPRPT Phase II and III goals. The Phase I air-launched demonstrator was completed successfully. The payoff of transitioning tactical propulsion technologies into the field after completion of any of the three IHPRPT phases is significant. Transitioning technology from IHPPPT has begun in all application areas.

Rocket Propulsion has come of age. Although its potentialities and capabilities in many areas have been recognized for centuries, it is only in recent years that scientists have had the materials and the manufacturing techniques at their command so they could control and direct the tremendous forces available. Space exploration and manned flights by astronauts have brought the science of rocketry to the attention of the general public. It has also stimulated the interest of students at all levels of advancement in the technical details of space flight. Rocket Propellant Technologies is written for serious students of astronautics. This volume reviews briefly the history of rocketry and the fundamental principles connected with rocket propulsion. Types of propellants, the chemical reactions involved, and the techniques used in manufacturing are explained. The merits of solid and liquid fuels are enumerated. Exotic propellants of the future are discussed, with reasons why their development is essential. Finally, the safety aspects of manufacturing and testing rocket propellants are given in detail. The Amateur Rocket Association under whose guidance this series has been prepared, serves as a focal point for many related activities, bringing new ideas to the attention of its members and offering suggestions for future lines of research.
