Die "Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie" urteilte 1904 über den Dichter, Journalisten und Historiker Gustav Freytag (1816-1895), dieser sei "in seiner Gesammterscheinung als deutscher Schriftsteller [...] zeitgemäß und namhaft wie kein anderer". Freytag galt lange als der deutsche Nationaldichter. Die Bedeutung, die ihm von seinen Zeitgenossen und bis weit hinein ins 20. Jahrhundert zugeschrieben wurde, gründet sich in erster Linie auf seine nachmärzlichen Erfolgswerke "Die Journalisten" (1852) und "Soll und Haben" (1855) sowie auf seine Rolle als literaturpolitisch wirkmächtiger Mitherausgeber der Zeitschrift "Die Grenzboten". Ausgehend von Freytags ‚Hauptwerk‘ nimmt die Studie zum einen das Gesamtwerk des Autors, zum anderen charakteristische Kontexte und Konstellationen der Epoche des Realismus in den Blick. Die Arbeit profiliert Freytag als Schlüsselgestalt für die Etablierung des literarischen Realismus nach 1848 und kontextualisiert seine Texte umfassend. Sie verfolgt dabei einen streng historisierenden und quellenzentrierten Ansatz, der politik-, sozial- oder auch presse- und gattungshistorische Interessen mit kanonisierungs-, rezeptionsgeschichtlichen sowie feldtheoretischen Zugängen verknüpft.

This volume consists of a series of essays, written by leading scholars within the field, demonstrating the types of inquiry that can be pursued into the transnational realities underpinning German-language culture and history as these travel right around the globe. Contributions discuss the inherent cross-pollination of different languages, times, places and notions of identity within German-language cultures and the ways in which their construction and circulation cannot be contained by national or linguistic borders. In doing so, it is not the aim of the volume to provide a compendium of existing transnational approaches to German Studies or to offer its readers a series of survey chapters on different fields of study to date. As German-language literature turned in the mid-nineteenth century to the depiction of the profane, sensual world, a corresponding anxiety emerged about the terms of that depiction—with consequences not only for realist poetics but also for the conception of the material world itself. At the Limit of the Obscene examines the roots and repercussions of this anxiety in German realist and postrealist literature. Through analyses of works by Adalbert Stifter, Gustav Freytag, Theodor Fontane, Arno Holz, Gottfried Benn, and Franz Kafka, Erica Weitzman shows how German realism’s conflicted representations of the material world lead to an idea of the obscene as an excess of sensual appearance beyond human meaning: the obverse of the anthropocentric worldview that German realism both propagates and pushes to its crisis. At the Limit of the Obscene thus brings to light the troubled and troubling ontology underlying German realism, at the same time demonstrating how its works continue to shape our ideas about representability, alterity, and the relationship of human beings to the non-human well into the present day.

A Stage for Debate presents a detailed analysis of the repertoire of the leading German-language stage of the nineteenth century, Vienna’s Burgtheater. The book explores the extent to which the Burgtheater repertoire contributed to important political and cultural debates on individual liberty, the role of women in society, and the understanding of national and regional identity. The relevance of the Burgtheater as a forum for political debate is assessed not by the degree to which the performed plays transgressed established norms, but by the range of positions that were voiced on a given topic. Martin Wagner investigates the roughly 1,000 plays from across Europe that were introduced to the Burgtheater’s repertoire between 1814 and 1867 by combining a general overview with detailed interpretations of especially successful plays. Wagner reveals that the Burgtheater was significantly more involved in contemporary debates than the stereotype of this stage as an artistically refined but apolitical institution suggests. Drawing from theatre studies and German and Austrian studies more broadly, A Stage for Debate revises the history of one of Europe’s leading theatres.

Den ersten literarischen Erfolg erzielt er mit dem Lustspiel Die Journalisten, 1855 schließlich erscheint der Roman Soll und Haben, der schnell eine große Verbreitung erreicht. Nicht zuletzt durch diesen Roman wird Freytag in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts zum meistgelesenen Autor in Deutschland. Zwischen 1859 und 1867 entstand sein kulturgeschichtliches Hauptwerk "Bilder aus der deutschen Vergangenheit" in vier Bänden. Freytag schildert darin die deutsche Geschichte am Beispiel ausgewählter Quellentexte. Ein Romanzyklus erschien zwischen 1872 bis 1880 unter dem Namen "Die Ahnen" und schildert die fiktiven Schicksale einer deutschen Familie von der germanischen Zeit bis zur damaligen Gegenwart, womit er einen Bogen von den Germanen zu den Deutschen seiner Zeit spannte. Knappe zehn Jahre vor seinem Tod, im Jahre 1886, gestaltete er mit "Erinnerungen" einen tagebuchähnlichen Text, in dem er seine wichtigsten Lebensabschnitte schilderte.

Als Verkörperung des amerikanischen Traums scheint der Selfmademan untrennbar mit dem Selbst- und Fremdverständnis Amerikas verbunden zu sein. Seit der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts avanciert die Figur auch in der deutschen Literatur zu einem vielgestaltigen Beschreibungsmedium der Moderne. Literaturgeschichtliche Signifikanz entfaltet der Selfmademan vor allem dadurch, dass er als Träger einer neuen Subgattung, dem Aufstiegsroman, ein Gegenmodell zum Bildungsroman profiliert. Dieses Modell vernetzt Erzählbestände aus der zeitgenössischen Ratgeber- und Biographieliteratur, der Evolutions- und Unternehmertheorie. Verhandelt werden Bilder der Kraftmobilisierung, Zukunftsoffenheit und Maskulinität, der ,Amerikanisierung‘ und Ökonomisierung. Die Studie beleuchtet das historische Redefeld um den Selfmademan und seine literarischen Manifestationen, wobei insbesondere Romane und Erzählungen des Realismus, Naturalismus und der Zeit um 1900 in den Blick genommen werden. Rekonstruiert wird so die Imaginations- und Verfahrensgeschichte eines Figurentypus, der im 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert modernediagnostische Beschreibungen anleitet, interdiskursive Resonanzeffekte auslöst und mit dem Aufstiegsroman eine facettenreiche Subgattung begründet.
