Em 2017, a principal obra de Guy Debord, A sociedade do espetáculo (SE), completou 50 anos de sua estreia no mercado editorial. A influência dos escritos debordianos, apresentados nessa primeira edição de 1967, já pôde ser percebida no ano seguinte, durante o Maio de 68. Desde então, as 221 teses, organizadas em nove capítulos, vêm servindo de base para o debate sobre a sociedade capitalista em seu ápice, a sociedade do espetáculo. Mas será que uma reflexão de cinco décadas ainda é válida para pensar a contemporaneidade? Na opinião dos autores envolvidos na obra coletiva A sociedade do espetáculo: Debord, 50 anos depois, ainda há muito para se discutir sobre a SE. Com um texto fugidio e cheio de conexões, Debord impõe uma leitura cuidadosa para que suas referências, não expressas de forma clara, possam ser apreendidas. O presente livro caracteriza-se como um esforço interpretativo e coletivo que, longe de se apresentar como definitivo, propõe-se aprofundado o suficiente para atestar a atualidade de um pensador que sempre figurou, a despeito de sua própria vontade, como vanguardista. Além do esforço de interpretar amiúde as teses de cada capítulo da SE, o que é apresentado, respectivamente, em cada capítulo do presente livro, esta obra coletiva também guarda espaço para uma breve reflexão sobre a presença de Debord nos estudos contemporâneos de comunicação, para a conturbada biografia do autor e para uma reflexão sobre a ideia de cultura em Debord. Se o ano de confecção deste projeto marcou o quinquenário da SE, seu lançamento se dá na comemoração dos 30 anos da publicação de Comentários sobre a sociedade do espetáculo (1988), que pode ser entendida como uma espécie de continuação do livro de 1967. Com o pretexto das datas comemorativas, convidamos os interessados em compreender melhor o enigmático autor francês à leitura dessa reflexão conjunta, que resulta de mais de uma década de estudos do Grupo de Pesquisa do CNPq Comunicação e Sociedade do Espetáculo.
