The skin is divided immediately above Poupart's ligament and in a direction parallel with it, then the panniculus adiposus, and, underneath that, the superficial abdominal fascia, in which, midway between the symphysis and the anterior superior spine of the ilium, the epigastric vessels will be found. The superficial fascia is divided only by a thin layer of fat from the much thicker aponeurosis of the external oblique. The opening is covered by the thin cremasteric fascia. Between the limbs of the inguinal ring the round ligament emerges with the ilioinguinal nerve.
