This way lies monsters and madness. Because you’re about to enter the imagination of H.P. Lovecraft. A master of the short story form, Lovecraft made the unknowable scarily real. Parallel universes, alien worlds, vengeful spirits—all realised in the space of a few pages. And all brought to life with spare, simple language, making Lovecraft’s fiction an easy read for modern audiences. This volume contains five of his short stories: "The Horror at Martin’s Beach", "The Nameless City", "The Ghost Eater", "The Crawling Chaos" and "The Doom that Came to Sarnath". It’s an essential collection for fans of otherworldly horror. H.P. Lovecraft was an American horror and science fiction writer. Born in Rhode Island, he became a pioneer of ‘cosmic horror’, conjuring up a lore of supernatural creatures who exist beyond our understanding. His best known stories include "The Call of Cthulhu", "At the Mountains of Madness" and "The Colour Out of Space". While he was a mainstay of pulp magazines, Lovecraft never achieved wider literary recognition in his lifetime. But his posthumous influence has been profound. It can be found in everything from the fiction of Stephen King and Neil Gaiman to the HBO series "Lovecraft Country".

H. P. Lovecraft was a voracious reader of supernatural and fantastic fiction, continually on the hunt for powerful and stimulating works in these genres. Many of the stories he read directly influenced his own writings. This first volume of H. P. Lovecraft's Favorite Stories presents 16 stories that Lovecraft found to be of particular merit. Among them are the beautiful poetic fantasy Idle Days on the Yann" by Lord Dunsany; Fiona Macleod's grimly evocative The Sin-Eater, which influenced The Rats In the Walls"; Arthur Machen's grisly novelette Novel of the White Powder, which Lovecraft adapted for Cool Air; and M. P. Shiel's The House of Sounds, which Lovecraft ranked among the greatest weird tales ever written. Also included are hard-to-find stories by Nathaniel Hawthorne, E. F. Benson, Theophile Gautier, John Buchan and others, as well as two stories from the legendary pulp magazine Weird Tales (Seabury Quinn's The Phantom Farmhouse" and Arthur J. Burks's Bells of Oceana). The volume contains an introduction by S. T. Joshi as well as notes on the individual stories, giving back ground on the authors as well as on Lovecraft's appreciation of the tales and their possible influence on his work.

A chilling collection of four Lovecraft tales adapted by award winning comic writer Steven Philip Jones. Lovecraft is considered one of America’s most innovative and popular American horror writers. The master of the weird tale during the first decades of the 20th Century until his premature death in 1937, Lovecraft’s distinctive style and canon of work has influenced many authors. Jones takes the classic tales and while remaining true to the source, brings them into the modern age which can sometimes make the horror even more terrifying. These tales are illustrated by Octavio Cariello who has worked on DC's Green Lantern, Deathstroke, and Black Lightning comic series. The four illustrated stories within this Volume are "The Lurking Fear" where Arthur Monroe explores a sinkhole where bodies are found, savagely torn apart is if by wild animals. "Beyond the Wall of Sleep" shows that the power of the mind is a mysterious thing and when a researcher finds that he and a criminal patient are somehow linked, the effect can go beyond just mysterious. "The Tomb" tells the tale of Jervas Dudley, who is convinced ghosts exist and when he visits the site where his ancestors perished 200 years ago, he might just find out for sure, and "The Alchemist", for over 600 years the male descendants of the Chabrillane family have all inexplicably perished on their 32nd birthday. Now, the last Count de Chabrillane is about to turn 32.

Howard Phillips Lovecraft - known as H.P.Lovecraft (August 20, 1890 - March 15, 1937) was an American author who achieved posthumous fame through his in uential works of horror ction. He was virtually unknown and published only in pulp magazines before he died in poverty, but he is now regarded as one of the most signi cant 20th-century authors in his genre. Lovecraft was born in Providence, Rhode Island where he spent most of his life. Lovecraft was never able to support himself from earnings as author and editor. He saw commercial success increasingly elude him in this latter period, partly because he lacked the con dence and drive to promote himself. He subsisted in progressively straitened circumstances in his last years; an inheritance was completely spent by the time that he died at age 46. According to Joyce Carol Oates, Lovecraft - as with Edgar Allan Poe in the 19th century - has exerted "an incalculable influence on succeeding generations of writers of horror fiction." Horror, fantasy, and science fiction author Stephen King called Lovecraft "the twentieth century's greatest practitioner of the classic horror tale." King has made it clear in his semi- autobiographical non-fiction book Danse Macabre that Lovecraft was responsible for King's own fascination with horror and the macabre, and was the single largest figure to influence his fiction writing.
