A study was conducted in western New York during the 1987 and 1988 waterfowl breeding seasons to identify locally nesting dabbling duck species, document key nesting habitats, and estimate nest success rates (NSR). Data were collected within a 7,963 ha area on the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge and state- owned Oak Orchard and Tonawanda Wildlife Management Areas. Systematic nest searches were done in 4 grassland cover types: planted grassland, naturally seeded grassland, reverted cropland, and rights-of-way. The mallard (Anas platyrhynchos)and blue-winged teal (A. discors) were the predominant nesting species, comprising 39% and 53% respectively of the 338 nests found in grasslands. The overall nest success rate for mallards was .09 and the NSR for blue-winged teal averaged .21. Mallard nesting attempts were most successful in planted grassland (NSR = .28) and naturally seeded grassland (.11) and least successful in rights-of-way (1%) and reverted cropland (3%). Planted grasslands.

The use of bottomland hardwoods by nesting mallards (Anas platyrhynchos)was studied in western New York on the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge and the state-owned Tonawanda and Oak Orchard Wildlife Management Areas. Nest searches were conducted in 550.0 and 712.6 ha of approximately 832.6 ha of available bottomland hardwoods in 1989 and 1990,respectively. Mallards began nesting as early as the third week in March and ended the first week in June, with nesting peaks occurring in mid-April and mid-May. A total of 239 nests were located on tree crotches, hummocks, tree stumps, tree cavities, and 'other' sites. Nest site use compared to availability indicated a significant preference for three crotches and stumps in 1989 (P

Recruitment of waterfowl into the breeding population is a function of nesting success and duckling survival. Nesting success of mallards throughout their North American range has been well studied and estimates of duckling survival exist for mallards breeding in California, the northcentral U.S. and the prairie- parkland region of North Amercia; however, there have been no reliable estimates of duckling survival for mallards breeding in eastern North America. Survival, sources of mortality, movements and habitat use of mallard broods were studied at Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge and Tonawanda Wildlife Management Area in western New York during 1991-92. Hens were captured on nests during incubation and fitted with radio transmitters;ducklings were radio-marked before they left the nest.

Updates the bible of New York State ornithology, John Bull's 1974 Birds of New York State. The species accounts, contributed by 60-plus individual birders, include information on range, abundance, breeding, occurrence, and remarks about subspecies and records from neighboring states. Several prefatory essays cover New York's physical environment, the role of the Federation of New York State Bird Clubs in conservation efforts, and long-term changes in the birdlife of New York State. Includes some bandw drawings, but not for every bird listed, as well as four color maps. Indexed by scientific and English bird names. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Nesting success is an important vital rate affecting the reproductive fitness of birds, and predation typically is the single most important factor affecting nesting success. Presumably, birds should nest in locations that maximize nest survival. If specific nest characteristics increase the probability that a nest will hatch, natural (phenotypic) selection could favour use of sites with these features, producing nonrandom patterns of nest site use. Alternatively, birds that are highly selective in nest site choices might be at a disadvantage if predators learn to forage preferentially in these locations and improve their efficiency in depredating nests; in this case, random nesting patterns could be favoured. Finally, it has been hypothesized that predation pressure can influence nest site selection patterns of entire bird communities. If predators develop a search image to hunt for bird nests, then nests that are most similar to each other, irrespective of species, should sustain higher mortality. To evaluate these hypotheses, I quantified nest site selection patterns of multiple species of ground-nesting dabbling ducks in areas where predation pressure was normally high, and compared these patterns to those on areas where predation was relaxed. Predation pressure was experimentally reduced by removing common predators of duck nests and females (mainly red foxes, coyotes, skunks and raccoons) on some study areas and not on others (controls). Predator removal and natural causes produced a 10-fold difference in duck nesting across study sites, allowing for investigation of effects of predation pressure on nest site selection of ducks. Coarse scale habitat selection patterns were similar to results reported in previous studies; blue-winged teal and northern shoveler were found more often in native grassland than in other habitat types, while gadwall and mallard nests occurred more frequently in shrub patches when compared with other habitat patches.
