On May 1, 1954, striking banana workers on the North Coast of Honduras brought the regional economy to a standstill, invigorating the Honduran labor movement and placing a series of demands on the US-controlled banana industry. Their actions ultimately galvanized a broader working-class struggle and reawakened long-suppressed leftist ideals. The first account of its kind in English, Roots of Resistance explores contemporary Honduran labor history through the story of the great banana strike of 1954 and centers the role of women in the narrative of the labor movement. Drawing on extensive firsthand oral history and archival research, Suyapa G. Portillo Villeda examines the radical organizing that challenged US capital and foreign intervention in Honduras at the onset of the Cold War. She reveals the everyday acts of resistance that laid the groundwork for the 1954 strike and argues that these often-overlooked forms of resistance should inform analyses of present-day labor and community organizing. Roots of Resistance highlights the complexities of transnational company hierarchies, gender and race relations, and labor organizing that led to the banana workers strike and how these dynamics continue to reverberate in Honduras today.

Winner, Jim Parish Award for Documentation and Publication of Local and Regional History, Webb County Heritage Foundation, 2015 Present-day smuggling across the U.S.-Mexico border is a professional, often violent, criminal activity. However, it is only the latest chapter in a history of illicit business dealings that stretches back to 1848, when attempts by Mexico and the United States to tax commerce across the Rio Grande upset local trade and caused popular resentment. Rather than acquiesce to what they regarded as arbitrary trade regulations, borderlanders continued to cross goods and accepted many forms of smuggling as just. In Border Contraband, George T. Díaz provides the first history of the common, yet little studied, practice of smuggling across the U.S.-Mexico border. In Part I, he examines the period between 1848 and 1910, when the United States' and Mexico's trade concerns focused on tariff collection and on borderlanders' attempts to avoid paying tariffs by smuggling. Part II begins with the onset of the Mexican Revolution in 1910, when national customs and other security forces on the border shifted their emphasis to the interdiction of prohibited items (particularly guns and drugs) that threatened the state. Díaz's pioneering research explains how greater restrictions have transformed smuggling from a low-level mundane activity, widely accepted and still routinely practiced, into a highly profitable professional criminal enterprise.

Firmar un contrato de trabajo es cada día más complicado. Las cifras del paro se han disparado y parece que en un futuro cercano la situación no mejorará demasiado. Aunque no hay soluciones sencillas al problema del desempleo, es posible que si se recuperan alternativas que en un principio se habían descartado, las oportunidades de encontrar trabajo aumenten. Se han reducido mucho y las plazas que salen hoy son muy limitadas, pero las hay. Quien se presente a una oposición debe estudiar durante bastante tiempo si quiere tener posibilidades de obtener un puesto de trabajo, más ahora que la competencia es mucho más dura. Sin embargo, para los concursos solo es necesario presentar méritos laborales y académicos anteriores y, en ocasiones, pasar una entrevista. Conviene, por tanto, consultar de manera periódica las páginas web de la Administración donde se publican cada semana las vacantes para empleos públicos. También es recomendable apuntarse a boletines en los que se informa de forma puntual sobre la oferta pública de empleo. La mayoría de las vacantes de los concursos son ahora para cubrir bajas por maternidad, por enfermedad o contratos de relevo para jubilaciones anticipadas. Se debe tener toda la documentación preparada, como los títulos académicos, los cursos realizados y la vida laboral actualizada, para el momento en el que se convoque una plaza. También se valoran los certificados de funciones de las empresas para cotejar si coinciden con las que se llevarán a cabo en el nuevo puesto de trabajo. Como los plazos para presentar los expedientes son reducidos, se debe tener todo disponible. Cada vez más personas se plantean las oposiciones como medio para lograr un puesto de trabajo. Con la tasa de desempleo en aumento, aprobar estos exámenes se convierte en la meta de ciudadanos en paro o que quieren mejorar su estatus profesional. Sin embargo, a la par que aumenta el número de interesados. En época de crisis aumenta el número de personas que se presenta a una oposición. Si se consigue una plaza, los afortunados se asegurarán un empleo o, en otros casos, tendrán la opción de formar parte de una bolsa de trabajo a la cual las instituciones recurren para cubrir bajas o puestos con carácter temporal. Una de las claves del éxito es la preparación previa, ya que de ella dependerá en gran medida el resultado. Los cuatro aspectos fundamentales son: informarse de la convocatoria, conseguir el temario de la oposición, revisar exámenes anteriores para familiarizarse con ellos y cumplir los requisitos exigidos, en cuanto a titulación o formación.
