"The Sunna is the first subsidiary source (masdar far`i) after the Qur'an among the sources of Islamic law. We describe it as a subsidiary source because it is the Qur'an that actually indicated that it is a source, and the basis of everything is the Qur'an. The Qur'an commanded us to follow the messenger of Allah: therefore we follow the messenger of Allah." Shaykh Dr. Muhammad Sa`id Ibn Mulla Ramadan al-Buti "The meaning of the expression Binding Proof of the Sunnah is that the Sunna points to the judgment of Allah Most High, either as definitive knowledge (`ilm) or as as probable knowledge (zann), bringing it out and disclosing it for us. We understand the Divine rulings by means of the Sunna and it becomes binding upon us to put its content into practice, So the real meaning of the Sunna as binding proof is exposition and proof-inference necessitating obligatory practice of their results because the latter is the Divine decision." Dr. `Abd al-Ghani ibn `Abd al-Khaliq The book also contains the translation of Imam Ibn Hajar al-`Asqalani's explanation of the Hadith on Islam, Iman and Ihsan also known as Gibril's hadith from the Fathul-Bari. Shaykh Gibril Fouad Haddad is author of Four Imams and Their Schools, The Musnad of Ahl al-Bayt and The Muhammadan Light among other works. Among his translations to English from Arabic are: Qadi Yusuf an-Nabahani's The Prophet Muhammad's Knowledge of the Unseen, the acclaimed The Lights of Revelation and the Secrets of Interpretation: Hizb One of the Commentary on the Quran by Imam al-Baydawi, Ibn Khafif's Correct Islamic Doctrine, Ibn `Arabi's Doctrine of the Muslims, Shaykh Muhammad ibn `'Alawi al-Maliki's The Prophet's Night Journey and Heavenly Ascent and many other esteemed works. Born in Beirut in 1960, Dr. Haddad embraced Islam while a graduate student in French Literature at Columbia University in New York. He studied at the feet of many of the greatest scholars of Sham, Cyprus and Yemen and has ijazas in numerous hadith transmissions. He lives in Brunei Darussalam.

As the second main source of the true religion of Islam, hadith has a history full of ups and downs as far as the manner of its transmittal and the periods of its compilation and publication are concerned. Those who are acquainted with Islamic history have all acknowledged that from the time of transmittal up to now, hadith as been associated with many desirable as well as undesirable events, and its compilation and publication in some periods have had both faithful advocates and stern adversaries. For this reason, learning the “history of hadith” – though a piece of knowledge outside the different branches of the science of hadith – is essential for all those who want to benefit from the Sunnah and the corpus of hadith especially in view of the fact that the beginning of hadith compilation and its mechanism have not been the same for the proponents of the various Islamic schools of thought, each of them having a different opinion whose outcome may adversely affect the credibility and status of the existing traditions (ahadith). The present book, which has been written as a textbook in the tertiary level of Islamic studies, endeavors to present the general subjects relevant to hadith and its history as well as to acquaint the students of this field with the Sunni hadith collections and the Four Books (Kutub al-Arba‘ah) of the Shi‘ah in a simple and easy-to-understand approach.

The importance of hadith as the basis of Islamic law, theology, and ethics cannot be underestimated. Alongside the Quran, it constitutes the second source of Islamic shariah and one's practice. While no Muslim will challenge the authority of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) as many have differing views with regards to ascertaining exactly what the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said and did. This difference is a consequence of the diverse methodologies employed in establishing the normative practices of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). The spectrum of ideas and opinions encompasses the entire scope of thought from outright rejection of hadith to a highly literal reading of it. This translation provides yet another approach to understanding hadith. The translated text is the introduction to a large multi-volume work in Arabic called I'la as-Sunan. The original work was a response to the Ahle hadith allegation that the school of Imam Abu Hanifah is deprived of hadith. In this introduction, the author pens his methodology for writing the I'la as-Sunan. The author endeavors to deconstruct the false understanding that hadith science is absolute and fixed. He argues that since the science of hadith is not prescriptive in the shariah, no one group can lay claim to it or claim a universal understanding of it. This book will be of interest to students who have a penchant for abstract theories and methods and to advanced students of hadith and Islamic thoughts. About the Author Mawlana Zafar Ahmad al-Uthmani, the illustrious nephew of Hakim al-Ummah Mawlana Ashraf Ali at-Thanawi was born on 13 Rabi al-Awwal 1310/1892. Allah bestowed him with a remarkable memory and at a tender age he memorized the Holy Quran. From the age of seven, he was studying mathematics, Persian, and Urdu with Mawlana Yasin, the father of Mufti Shafi. He studied the Islamic sciences under various teachers including his maternal uncle Hakim al-Ummah in both Thana Bhawan as well as Kanpur. After receiving a license in the sacred and rational sciences, he went to the Islamic seminary Mazahir Ulum and became a student of the hadith master and Gnostic Mawlana Khalil Ahmad Saharanpuri. He received his license to teach hadith at the young age of 18. He then became a professor of Islamic sciences in various institutions including his alma mater Mazahir Ulum and Imdad al-Ulum in Thana Bhawan. He is the author of many books on the sacred sciences of which the I'la as-Sunan is his magnum opus.

The Muslims agree that the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (S) is the second of the two revealed fundamental sources of Islam, after the Glorious Qur'an. The authentic Sunnah is contained within the vast body of Hadeeth literature. Unfortunately however, statements will continue to be attributed to the Prophet (S) although the person quoting them may have no idea what the people of knowledge of Hadeeth have ruled regarding those Ahadeeth, thus ironically being in danger of contravening the Prophet's widely-narrated stern warnings about attributing incorrect/unsound statements to him. Similarly, just as Allah preserved the Qur'an, he preserved the Sunnah by enabling the Companions and those after them (may Allah be pleased with them) to memorise, write down and pass on the statements of the Messenger (S) and the descriptions of his Way, as well as to continue the blessings of practising the Sunnah. Later, as the purity of the knowledge of the Sunnah became threatened, Allah caused the Muslim nation to produce outstanding individuals of incredible memory-skills and analytical expertise, who journeyed tirelessly to collect hundreds of thousands of narrations and distinguish the true words of precious wisdom of their Messenger (S) from those corrupted by weak memories, from forgeries by unscrupulous liars, and from the statements of the enormous number of 'ulama', the Companions and those who followed their way, who had taught in various centres of learning and helped to transmit the legacy of Muhammad (S) - all of this achieved through precise attention to the words narrated and detailed familiarity with the biographies of the thousands of reporters of Hadeeth. Action being the best way to preserve teachings, the renewers of Islam also revived the practice of the blessed authentic Sunnah. The methodology of the expert scholars of Hadeeth in assessing such narrations and sorting out the genuine from the mistaken/fabricated etc., forms the subject-matter of a wealth of material left to us by the muhaddithun (scholars of Hadeeth, "traditionists"). This short treatise is a humble effort to introduce this extremely wide subject to English readers. Great benefit has been derived from the outstanding scholarly work in this field, Muqaddimah Ibn al-Salah. Visit our eBook Store at: www.payhip.com/idpebooks Contact us at: [email protected]
