The Viennese artists association Hagenbund played a crucial role in the artistic scene of not only Vienna but of Central Europe in general. Active from 1900 to 1938, the group united several different art movements under its umbrella and helped to introduce a new creative dynamic at a time when the Vienna Secession was slowly losing its impact. In that context, the liberal political and artistic attitude of the Hagenbund membership was revolutionary. The Hagenbund counted more than 250 members, among them Georg Merkel, Oskar Laske, Carry Hauser, Otto Rudolf Schatz, Emil Strecker, and Fritz Schwarz-Waldegg. This volume traces the history of the Hagenbund and its influence, offering the first sustained analysis of the group in an art-historical context. Packed with more than three hundred color images, it will be the standard work on the Hagenbund for decades to come."

Toward the end of her life, Viennese artist Marie-Louise von Motesiczky (1906–1996) at last gained recognition as one of Austria’s most important 20th-century painters. The great art historian Ernst Gombrich praised the artist’s striking individuality and the delicacy and subtlety of her painting. This book celebrates Motesiczky’s work and situates the artist in the troubled history of her times. Drawing on a wealth of unpublished family archives, including decades of correspondence between Marie-Louise and the writer Elias Canetti, the book tells the story of Motesiczky’s life from her childhood in Vienna amidst talented and distinguished family members to her later years living and working among other exiled artists in England. The book also offers a sensitive critical study of Marie-Louise’s paintings, discussing particular works and the circumstances that surrounded their creation. These include compelling self-portraits, a moving series of paintings of the artist’s aging mother, and lyrical depictions of her English garden.

Rethinking Period Boundaries written by Lucian George and has been published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-03-21 with History categories.

Periodization is an ever-present feature of the grammar of history-writing. As with all grammatical rules, the order it imposes can structure but also stifle historical interpretations. Though few historians consider their period boundaries as anything more than useful guidelines, heuristic artifice all too easily congeals into immovable structure, blinkering the historical gaze. In this cross-disciplinary volume, an international group of historians and cultural scholars considers different ways in which accepted period boundaries in modern European history and cultural studies can be challenged and rethought. Alongside a theoretical introduction and epilogue, the volume contains seven case studies exploring hitherto under-researched continuities and discontinuities in the social, cultural, intellectual, literary, labour and art history of 19th- and 20th-century Europe, with a particular focus on the continent’s East. Topics covered include French anti-communism, peasant memories of serfdom, cosmopolitan art in a nationalist age, the communist takeover of Poland, Russian literary history, and national day traditions in East-Central Europe. To problematize period boundaries, the chapters in this volume adopt the perspective of social groups that standard periodization schemes have ignored; shine a light on "awkward" actors who have appeared out of step with canonical understandings of their period; consider how historical actors themselves divide up history and how this informs historical practice; and explore the difficulties that the non-synchronicity of different historical processes can pose for periodization.

The specific role of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the later nation of Austria within the formation of regional art histories in East Central Europe has received little attention in art historical research so far. Taking into account the era of the Dual Monarchy as well as the period after 1989, the contributions analyze and critically scrutinize the imperial legacies, transnational transfer processes and cultural hierarchies in art historiographies, artistic practices and institutional histories. Consisting of 17 texts, with new commissions and one reprint, case studies, monographic essays and interviews grouped thematically into two sections, the anthology proposes a pluriversal narrative on regional, cultural and political contexts.
