Kerajaan Malaysia telah meratifikasi Konvensyen Mengenai Hak Kanak-kanak pada 28 Disember, 1994. Konvensyen ini merupakan konvensyen antarabangsa mengenai pemberian hak sivil, politik, ekonomi, sosial dan kebudayaan kepada semua kanak-kanak. Sehubungan itu, Konvensyen tersebut mengesahkan hak kanak-kanak untuk menyuarakan pandangan dan idea mereka, mengambil bahagian dalam aktiviti sosial yang diperlukan untuk pembangunan diri mereka, menikmati keperluan hidup yang mencukupi dan sejahtera serta mengamalkan kebudayaan mereka dalam suasana ekologi sosial yang selamat dan harmoni. Suatu survei di Rumah Kanak-kanak seluruh negara telah dijalankan bagi mengukur pelaksanaan usulan hak kanak-kanak yang disyorkan oleh konvensyen tersebut. Berasaskan survei berkenaan, buku ini memaparkan kualiti hidup kanak-kanak yang sedang menerima perkhidmatan penjagaan dan perlindungan di Rumah Kanak-kanak. Buku ini turut memaparkan insentif-insentif yang diambil oleh institusi jagaan awam dalam melindungi kanak-kanak daripada segala ancaman bahaya. Dari aspek pembangunan diri pula, buku ini memaparkan serangkaian intervensi pendidikan dan vokasional yang disediakan oleh pihak institusi kepada kanak-kanak yang berada dalam perkhidmatan institusi jagaan ini. Dapatan kajian mengenai pelaksanaan hak kanak-kanak yang menjadi teras perbincangan buku ini diyakini dapat membuka mata ramai pihak; khususnya pihak yang terlibat dengan penyampaian perkhidmatan kebajikan kanak-kanak, untuk menambah baik lagi perkhidmatan jagaan dan perlindungan berasaskan institusi untuk kanak-kanak di negara kita.

This work analyzes how the conditions of modernity have shaped the contemporary views of the prominent Islamic thinker, Yusuf al- Qaradawi. At the outset, it lays the foundation for a discussion of modernity by reviewing the ideas of prominent philosophers, such as Kant, Hegel, as well as of contemporary social scientists, such as Habermas. Based on their understanding of modernity, this work shows how increased education, mass communication, and migration have changed the way Muslims perceive their religion. It also shows how al-Qaradawi's thinking reflects this. Al-Qaradawi is put into historical perspective through a review of modernity in the Islamic world over the last 200 years. This is followed by an examination of his views on a number of pertinent issues, including science, massmedia, jihad, international relations, democracy, and feminism. The findings are based on hundreds of fatwas, sermons, and interviews in the Arab media, and on relevant secondary sources, both in English and Arabic. As of yet, no in-depth work of this length has been published on al-Qaradawi in English.

Braithwaite's argument against punitive justice systems and for restorative justice systems establishes that there are good theoretical and empirical grounds for anticipating that well designed restorative justice processes will restore victims, offenders, and communities better than existing criminal justice practices. Counterintuitively, he also shows that a restorative justice system may deter, incapacitate, and rehabilitate more effectively than a punitive system. This is particularly true when the restorative justice system is embedded in a responsive regulatory framework that opts for deterrence only after restoration repeatedly fails, and incapacitation only after escalated deterrence fails. Braithwaite's empirical research demonstrates that active deterrence under the dynamic regulatory pyramid that is a hallmark of the restorative justice system he supports, is far more effective than the passive deterrence that is notable in the stricter "sentencing grid" of current criminal justice systems.
