Half-metals are particular ferromagnetic materials which can be considered as hybrids between metals and semiconductors. A particular feature of these materials is that electrons at the Fermi level show complete spin polarization making them prime targets for research into suitable divices for spin electronics. This book is both an introduction and state-of-art survey of the latest advances in the understanding and applications of Heusler alloys and related compounds.

Heusler alloys are of great interest for their potential use in spintronics. However, their great promise theoretically has yet to be realized experimentally. The discrepancy is expected to be due to structural disorder. In this work, we introduce a new approach of designing materials to control structure-property relationships in Heusler alloys. Promising alloys are first screened and investigated theoretically, and then bulk properties are determined experimentally. Our findings shed light on tuning the electronic and magnetic properties to obtain robust half-metallic and spin-gapless semiconducting behavior. Full Heulser alloys (X2YZ) exhibit exceptional tunability of properties depending upon the elements occupying X and/or Y site. We performed a series of systematic investigations to explore this tunability further: using low valence transition metal atoms (Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co) as a quaternary element on the X site, using low valence transition metals on the Y site in Co28́2xYxFeZ (0 9́Þ x 9́Þ 1) for example, and using main group elements (Z = Ge, Si, Ga, Al) on the Z site in Co- and Fe-based ternary Heusler alloys Co2FeZ. In our first example, we used Cr and V in place of Co in disordered Co2FeGe. We found Cr and V not only stabilize disordered Co2FeGe, but also tune the electronic and magnetic properties, making Cr and V ideal dopants. The next system was Co2-xYxFeSi (Y = Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, or Fe, 0 9́Þ x 9́Þ 1), which eventually led to a global overview of the structural, magnetic, electronic, and mechanical properties of promising candidate materials. Based on this, we synthesized Co2-xYxFe(Ga,Al) (Y = Ti, V, Cr, Mn, or Fe, x = 0.50) and found Co1.50Mn0.50Fe(Ga,Al) showed spin-gapless semiconducting behavior. Other alloys in the series also show interesting tunable properties. Inspired by earlier work showing a hexagonal Heusler analogue may retain half-metallic character and show high magneto-crystalline anisotropy, we investigated Fe-based Heusler compounds Fe3-xYxGe (Y = V, or Cr, 0 9́Þ x 9́Þ 1) with a hexagonal DO19 structure. This system shows high magnetic moments and magneto-crystalline anisotropy, which takes another step toward practical applications in perpendicular media and CPP-GMR.

In this work we use a combination of x-ray magnetic circular and linear dichroism (XMCD and XMLD) techniques to examine the formation of local moments in Heusler alloys of the composition Co2MnX (where X=Si or Al). The existence of local moments in a half-metallic system is reliant upon the band gap in the minority-spin states. By utilizing the element-specific nature of x-ray techniques we are able to explore the origin of the minority-spin band gap in the partial density of states (PDOS), via the degree of localization of moments on Co and Mn atoms. We observe a crucial difference in the localization of the Co moment when comparing Co2MnSi (CMS) and Co2MnAl (CMA) films that is consistent with the predicted larger minority-spin gap in the Co PDOS for CMS. These results provide important evidence for the dominant role of the Co minority-spin states in realizing half-metallic ferromagnetism (HMF) in these Heusler alloys. They also demonstrate a direct method for measuring the degree of interfacial HMF in the raw materials without the need for fabricating spin-transport devices.

Ternary Mn-based Heusler alloys often exhibit a ferromagnetic shape memory effect, which is best studied in Ni2MnGa, a prototype of Heusler alloys. Heusler Alloys: Structure, Properties and Applications opens by analyzing how by substituting nickel for iron, another Heusler alloy emerges, Fe2MnGa, with much richer structural and magnetic properties than Ni2MnGa and a large ferromagnetic shape memory performance in slightly off-stoichiometric compositions.Next, the effects of atomic site disorder on the transport, magnetic, optical, and magneto-optical properties and electronic structures of metallic Cu2MnAl, Ni2MnGa and Ni2MnIn and half-metallic Co2CrAl, Co2MnGa and Co2CrGa Heusler alloy films are been investigated and the findings are discussed. The concluding study presents first-order reversal curve diagrams of the full-Heusler alloy nanoparticles synthesized by co-precipitation method, followed by thermal annealing at 700 °C under Ar/H2 atmosphere. Interacting single domain particles were dominantly detected from analysis.

This thesis is devoted to experimental studies of Heusler compounds CoFeCrAl, CoFeCrX (X = Si, Ge) and Mn2PtSn. These Heusler alloys present an interesting class of ferromagnetic materials for spintronic applications since they are predicted to be spin gapless semiconductors and have half-metallic properties with 100 % spin polarization at the Fermi level. In this thesis, the structural, magnetic, spin-polarization and electron- transport properties of the fabricated alloys were studied. CoFeCrAl thin films deposited on MgO exhibit nearly perfect epitaxy and a high degree of L21 Heusler order. All considered types of chemical disorder destroy the spin-gapless semiconductivity of Y-ordered CoFeCrAl, but B2 disorder and A2-type Cr-Fe disorder conserve the half-metallicity of the alloy. The transport spin polarization at the Fermi level is higher than 68%. Epitaxial thin films of inverse tetragonal Mn2PtSn were synthesized and show lattice constants a = 0.449 nm, and b = 0.615 nm. Magnetization measurements revealed an in-plane anisotropy energy of 10 Merg/cm3. CoFeCrSi and CoFeCrGe Heusler alloys crystallize in cubic L21 structures with a small site disorder. The CoFeCrSi alloy exhibited a high Curie temperature (TC = 790 K). Cubic CoFeCrGe decomposed into other compounds near 402 °C (675 K). A new tetragonal Co53.4Fe30.4Cr8.6Ge 7.6 phase with lattice parameters a = 0.760 nm, c = 0.284 nm was studied with a series of tilted electron- diffraction measurements in this work. The (Co, Fe)-rich phase was found to embedded in the matrix of a Cr-rich phase. The results show promise for the implementation of CoFeCrX (X = Al, Si, Ge) and Mn2PtSn in future spintronics devices.

The development of new materials is recognized as one of the major elements in the overall technological evolution that must go on in order to sustain and even improve the quality of life for citizens of all nations. There are many components to this development, but one is to achieve a better understanding of the properties of materials using the most sophisticated scientific tools that are available. As condensed matter physicists and materials scientists work toward this goal, they find that it is useful to divide their efforts and focus on specific areas, because certain analytical and theoretical techniques will be more useful for the study of one class of materials than another. One such area is the study of metals and metallic alloys, which are used in the manufacture of products as diverse as automobiles and space stations. Progress in this area has been very rapid in recent years, and the new developments come from many different countries. For these reasons the Advanced Research Workshop Programme in the NATO Scientific Affairs Division has seen fit to sponsor several meetings to bring together the researchers and students working in this field from the NATO countries and elsewhere. There have been a series of NATO-ASI's that have dealt with the results of research on the electronic structure of materials and the properties of metals, alloys, and interfaces. They are: "Electrons in finite and infinite structures" P. Phariseau and L.
