Der Projektbericht Nr. 1 versucht den größten Teil desjenigen Materials zusammenzustellen, das im Laufe von ca. 1 1⁄2 Jahren von den verschiedenen am Projekt beteiligten Mitgliedern des Teams und den weiteren Kooperationspartnern gesichtet und der Projektgruppe inzwischen für Einzeluntersuchungen zugänglich ist. Die Zusammenarbeit beider Architekten im Blick auf gemeinsame Architektur-Entwürfe beginnt mit der Teilnahme am Wettbewerb für das Ehrenmal an der Kleinen Alster 1930, über dessen Erfolg mit einem zweiten Platz Fritz Schumacher in der Deutschen Bauzeitung von 1930 berichtet hat. Zu den Höhepunkten der gemeinsamen Arbeit gehört der Wiederaufbau der Hauptkirchen St. Katharinen und St. Jacobi-Kirche in der Hamburger Altstadt und die Einweihung des von ihnen entworfenen modernen St. Jacobi-Turmes 1961. Eines der wenigen Fotos, das beide Personen zeigt, ist auf dem vorderen Deckblatt abgebildet. Es wurde im Zusammenhang mit der Einweihung des Turmes vom Fotografen Walter Lüden aufgenommen.

Für die Architekten Hopp und Jäger spielte die fotografische Dokumentation ihrer Projekte eine bedeutende Rolle: professioneller Fotografen-Bilder kamen dem Kunden entgegen, sein Bauwerk im vorteilhaften Licht darzustellen zu können. Für H&J hatten die Sammlungen von Abzügen in ca. 40 x 40 cm großen Fotoalben, wie sie meist für die Bauträger als Abschluss-Geschenk vorbereitet und als Doppel im Büro aufbewahrt wurden, auch Werbewirksamkeit gegenüber Neukunden. Diese konnten sich 'ein Bild' machen über das Werk der Architekten und daran eigene Vorstellungen entwickeln. Wenn auch diese Alben weitgehend nicht mehr erhalten sind, so sind es doch ein Großteil der Negative, von denen die Fotoabzüge herrührten. Der Projektbericht Nr. 2 nutzt die in den ersten zwei Jahren wieder zusammengetragenen Fotodokumente, um möglichst alle bekannten Kirchbauten und Renovierungen auch optisch vorzustellen. In Bericht 1 noch nicht vermerkte Baumaßnahmen sind jetzt als Ergänzung der Werkliste zugefügt, so dass das Oevre von nunmehr fast 80 Projekten präsentiert werden kann.

Im Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde die Hansestadt Hamburg durch schwere Luftangriffe heimgesucht. In dem grauenvollen Inferno der Julitage 1943 verwandelte sich das Bild unserer Stadt. Etwa 42.000 Menschen büßten ihr Leben ein, zusammen mit den Opfern der übrigen Luftangriffe rund 55.000 Zivilpersonen, weitere 50.000 wurden verwundet. Über 900.000 hatten ihre gesamte Habe verloren. Nach jedem Luftangriff begannen Geschädigte und Anwohner immer von Neuem mit Aufräumungs-, Bergungs- und Instandsetzungsarbeiten. Der gesamte Umfang der Zerstörungen an den Haupt- und weiteren Kirchen konnte erst nach Ende des Krieges genauer festgestellt werden. Der Gesamtverlust der Evangelisch-lutherischen Kirche im Hamburgischen Staate an gottesdienstlichen Stätten betrug allein 22 total vernichtete oder über 80 v. H. zerstörte und 6 schwer beschädigte. Dieser Bericht nach Aufzeichnungen des damaligen Bauleiters Heinrich Steinfath schildert den Wiederaufbau von St. Katharinen.
