Versions of Hamlet: Poetic Economy on Page and Stage takes a fresh look at an old textual problem: Instead of arguing the case for one of the three early Hamlet texts as "the one", the book presents a new analytical approach which allows us to see different Hamlet versions and the interpretations emerging from them side by side. Using a corpus which not only includes the three early printed texts but also 24 stage versions of the play, the book introduces an analytical method based on an assumption voiced by writers through the ages, namely that every part of a literary work belongs to a functional whole. Apart from making the relation between textual alterations and changing interpretations of the Hamlet texts visible, this study is the first to present a systematic overview of this principle of "poetic economy".

Shakespeare And The Modern Poet written by Neil Corcoran and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-04-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

Shakespeare is a major influence on poets writing in English, but the dynamics of that influence in the twentieth century have never been as closely analysed as they are in this important study. More than an account of the ways in which Shakespeare is figured in both the poetry and the critical prose of modern poets, this book presents a provocative new view of poetic interrelationship. Focusing on W. B. Yeats, T. S. Eliot, W. H. Auden, Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath, Neil Corcoran uncovers the relationships - combative as well as sympathetic - between these poets themselves as they are intertwined in their engagements with Shakespeare. Corcoran offers many enlightening close readings, fully alert to contemporary theoretical debates. This original study of influence and reception beautifully displays the nature of poetic influence - both of Shakespeare on the twentieth century, and among modern poets as they respond to Shakespeare.

Stephen Greenblatt's Will in the World is widely recognised to be the fullest and most brilliant account ever written of Shakespeare's life, his work and his age. Shakespeare was a man of his time, constantly engaging with his audience's deepest desires and fears, and by reconnecting with this historic reality we are able to experience the true character of the playwright himself. Greenblatt traces Shakespeare's unfolding imaginative generosity - his ability to inhabit others, to confer upon them his own strength of spirit, to make them truly live as independent beings as no other artist has ever done. Digging deep into the vital links between the playwright and his world, Will in the World provides the fullest account ever written of the living, breathing man behind the masterpieces.
