Em uma perspectiva histórico-teatral o autor investiga o que considerou serem as principais fontes matriciais para as concepções de improvisação, a saber, aquelas advindas do diretor e teórico russo Stanislavski e da vertente italiana (commedia dell'arte e Eugenio Barba). Pela análise dessas referências, seguida da investigação das obras de Boal eBurnier, o autor sugere que, de fato, é possível estabelecer comparações significativas entre a concepção de Stanislavski e Boal, de um lado, e a de Barba (diretamente relacionada à commedia dell'arte) e Burnier, de outro. A partir dessas convergências, estabelecem-se duas linhagens improvisacionais: Stanislavski-Boal; commedia dell'arte/Barba-Burnier.
