The Integrated Life written by Thomas P. Beyer and has been published by U of Minnesota Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1948-12-15 with Literary Collections categories.

The Integrated Life was first published in 1948. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. This volume of essays and poems is representative of the work and life of their author, a professor of English at Hamline University and for any years chairman of the department. Of the essays, some are personal, others works of literary appreciation, and still others discuss the profession of teaching, in particular the teaching of English; all reveal the man who wrote them. At Hamlin Dr. Beyer and reading have been almost synonymous. He proposed the general reading course in 1921 and directed it for twelve years. Students alert to this form of inspiration found existing delight not only in the outside reading but in the discussions with faculty members which followed. Colleagues and off-campus friends also came under provocative influence of Dr. Beyer, and his guidance has been frequently and freely acknowledged. When Dr. Beyer was honored in 1947 for his long fruitful association with Hamline University, a publication fund was established. It was unanimously agreed that a collection of Dr. Beyer's own essays, poems, and sketches should be the first venture. The Integrated Life is that volume. No attempt has been made to bring the material up to date. The collection appears as it was written—full of the flavor and wisdom of a truly honorable teacher and friend.

Sins And Disciplines written by Rita Moe and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-13 with categories.

At the heart of this collection are portraits of seven women, each personifying one of the Seven Deadly Sins--women, it turns out, we don't so much condemn as feel compassion for. Paired with each Sin is a Discipline--poems that ask, "Is discipline a means of self-betterment? A path to enlightenment? An excuse for cruelty?" Among the other poems is one that considers the "Angels and Demons" that attend each of us, another that imagines the responses of beasts of burden at the unveiling of the Ten Commandments, and a poem that lets us listen in as "The Virgin Mary Contemplates a Career Change." In settings ranging from mythological to mundane, ancient to contemporary, these poems consider sin and virtue with humor, insight, darkness, and light.

The author of Good Heart presents “lyric poetry that sings, enchants, debunks and then reconstructs the truths and mysteries of our lives” (Jim Moore, author of Prognosis). Winner of the Minnesota Book Award for Poetry Included in the Book Sense Picks Poetry Top Ten Written over the course of three decades, this extraordinary collection of new and selected poems presents a body of work from Deborah Keenan that is expressive variously of love and rage, vulnerability and authority, distraction and focus, and, perhaps above all, a sharply empathetic sense of observation. Keenan’s work balances holding on to what is dear with letting go of what she cannot change. With refreshing curiosity, these poems capture rich layers of life in trial and bliss alike, enabling us to see what a number of her contemporaries have recognized for some time: Deborah Keenan is one of our great poets. “My god, these are beautiful poems. I feel as if a great soul is speaking in these poems, after long thought and meditation and inward dialogue.” —Charles Baxter, author of The Feast of Love
