Excerpt from Hand Book of Casinghead Gas The extraction of gasoline from Casinghead Gas has grown to be a business of importance. From its inception in 1900 to 1914, little progress was made, but since that time the industry has grown to be nearly equal to that of the Natural Gas Industry. Since the publication of the Hand Book of Casinghead Gas in 1918, there have not been many radical changes in the method of extraction of gasoline from Casinghead Gas, but there have been many minor improvements. In continuing the publication of this book the author is constantly endeavoring to condense such tables necessary to the work so as to permit the use of any new material brought out in the business. It has always been our aim to publish all the essential information on the subject in a book of convenient size for the man in the field. We desire to thank personally Mr. John C. Diehl who has been closely associated with the author, together with many others who have in a large way assisted in furnishing the material. Excerpt from The Gas Engineer's Laboratory Handbook The object of this volume, as its title implies, is to describe the various analytical operations which are required in Gas works. In order to make it useful to those who may not have the Opportunity of access to other works on analysis, the general operations incidental to the carrying out of analytical operations are described in detail, and further, as a means of assisting those who are dependent on self study, the methods of analysing certain substances obtainable in a perfectly pure state, and consequently having an established composition, are minutely described; these examples are chosen, as being typical of the more commonly occurring analyses required in Gasworks, as they involve the same methods of manipulation. By comparing the results obtained in the analysis of these simple substances with the figures demanded by theory, the operator can satisfy himself as to his competency to perform the same operations when they occur in the estimations required in his daily work. For example, the analysis of barium chloride serves as a type of the methods of manipulation necessary in the determination of sulphur in coal, coke, and gas, and in ascertaining the accuracy of the solutions employed in the Referees' Ammonia Test, &0. The estimation of calcium serves as a type of the analysis of lime; and so on. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Handbook of the Petroleum Industry, Vol. 1 of 2 Wherever petroleum occurs in nature, natural gas is generally found in the same locality or region. Gas, however, is less restricted in its distribution than is oil, and numerous gas pools exist where no petroleum occurs in close proximity. Because of the relationship of natural gas to petroleum, the two substances must, to a consider able extent, be considered together. Both petroleum and natural gas are among the great industrial resources of the world and the countries which possess them in large quantities are exceedingly fortunate. The fact that these substances have not yet been developed in a particular locality is rarely proof of their absence, as no year passes without the discovery of new and often unsuspected fields or pools. The occurrence of oil and gas is widespread, no stratified rock being so young, and scarcely any so old, as absolutely to preclude their existence. Consequently, any country in which geological conditions are favorable is warranted in exerting every effort and undertaking great expense to investigate and determine its resources in petroleum and natural gas. In this outline of the occurrence of petroleum the numerous references made use of are given credit where possible. In addition to those specifically mentioned there are certain general sources of information, such as the report of S. F. Peckham entitled, The Production, Technology and Uses of Petroleum and its Products, in volume 10 Of the Tenth Census of the United States, 1880, pages 1-319' A Treatise on Petroleum by Sir Boverton Redwood, London, 1913, three volumes; Petroleum Mining and Oil Field Development, by Arthur Beeby Thompson, London, 1916, 648 pages; the annual statis tical reports in the Mineral Resources series of the United States Geological Survey, by David T. Day, S. H. Shotwell, Joseph D. Weeks, F. H. Oliphant, W. T. Griswold and John D. Northrop, and many other Geological Survey references of a general nature. In this chapter the word oil is frequently used as being sufficiently synonymous with petroleum for the subject matter in hand. Excerpt from Gas Chemists Handbook, 1916 The magnitude and delicacy of this work is fully realized and this is presented primarily as'a progress report. In time, the Institute would be well repaid for the expense incurred in the publication of such a handbook by the uniformity of practice that would result from the adoption of these methods and by the convenience to the gas Chemist Of having recognized standard methods pertaining to the industry collected in one convenient publication. While this first issue of the Handbook was a very decided step in the right direction, it was recognized that much was still to be accomplished and the continuance of the work de volved upon the 1915 Committee on Chemical Tests. This Committee was unable to do more than report satisfactory progress at the 1915 meeting of the Institute and the same Committee was re - appointed to Continue the revision over 1916. Excerpt from Waste and Correct Use of Natural Gas in the Home Domestic consumers waste more than 80 per cent of the gas received. The efficiency of most cooking and heating appliances could be trebled. By making natural gas worth saving the domestic consumers in the United States could get the same cooking and heating service with one-third of the gas - that is, make 1 foot of gas do the work of 8 - and greatly delay the day when the present supplies will be exhausted and consumers must go back to more ex pensive manufactured gas. It is time for the public to take a new Viewpoint on the waste of natural gas. It is time for the domestic consumer to realize-that his duty is not done when he cries out against the flagrant wastes oe curring in the gas fields, and demands of his Government that such wastes be abated; he must realize that he himself is likewise at fault and that it is time for him to set his own house in order. Further more, the domestic consumer must realize that these wastes do not concern him alone, and consequently he has not the right, merely be cause he pays for the gas, to employ it in any manner that pleases him, no matter how wasteful. Natural gas is a natural resource in which every inhabitant of this country has an equity. Those who waste the gas do so at the expense of others who would use it efficiently. Natural gas is not replaced by nature, and in comparison with the life of the nation the duration of the supply will be brief.
