Excerpt from Hand-Book of the Liturgy of the Church of England Freeman censures Wheatly and others for describing our Reformers as composers and compilers of our services. He even censures the Preface to the Prayer Book for its use of the term compiling as applied to the Revision of 1549. But that the Reformers, in the construction of our services, both composed and compiled, is simply a matter of fact. Excerpt from Garrick's Mode of Reading the Liturgy of the Church of England: A New Edition, With Notes, and a Preliminary Discourse on Public Reading Authors; meaning, it being at that period assumed that the qualification alone required to constitute a good public reader, was the apprehension of the author. It was observed, however, that all au thors could not read with correctness even their own works, and they certainly could not be charged with a misapprehension of what they themselves had written; and the Clergy could not be charged with a misapprehension of the Common Prayer, and still less of their own ser mons, whence it became evident that something beyond this one qualification was required to constitute a good public reader. Now observa tion has discovered other qualifications, both Mental and Vocal, to be necessary, and has also indicated the special education and training which is required to produce good public readers. Although this is familiarly known to many who fully estimate the value of guiding princi ples in other occupations, yet, it is often thought that common sense is a sufficient guide in public reading. Now the term common sense, when thus placed in opposition to a system of princi ples and rules, if it mean anything, must mean. Excerpt from Practical Discourses on the Liturgy of the Church of England, Vol. 3 of 3 Rev. Iv. 1, to the end - After this I looked, and a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice, which I heard, was as it were of a trumpet talking with me, which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter and immediately I was in the Spirit, &c. The mysterious doctrine of the holy Trinity was but obscurely revealed under the Old Testament; for which reason, before Christ's coming, we find little or no knowledge of it. God the Father, speaking in the plural number in the creation of man, saying, Come, let us make man in our own image, ' (gen. Is by some thought to denote the whole Trinity; and the mention of the Spirit's moving on the face of the waters, ' and the Son's bruising the serpent's head, ' (gen. They take to refer to the three Persons in it. But these are dark discoveries of so great a truth; and to interpret the three persons that appeared to Abraham, ' to be the three Persons of the holy Trinity, is not much better. And a father tells us, that God on purpose concealed from the Jews the doctrine of the Trinity, lest they should thence take occasion to fall into idolatry, and worship a plurality of Gods, to which they were too prone. Excerpt from Practical Discourses on the Liturgy of the Church of England, Vol. 4 The Communion Service, which we are now entering upon, begins with the Lord's Prayer, which, being the most perfect, the most absolute, and the most excellent form of prayer, indited and prescribed by our blessed Saviour himself, very fitly begins all the offices of divine service, according to the command and intention of Christ in these words of our text 'When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, ' &c. Nor can we hope better to prevail with the Father, than by addressing to him in the words of his only-begotten and beloved Son, and our only Lord and Saviour; who being in his Father's bosom, is best acquainted with the secrets of his mind and will, and therefore fittest to direct us both in the matter and manner of our petitions. And as this Prayer is a good beginning and ending of all our devotion, and is therefore fitly prescribed in all the offices of the Church; so it is no where more properly prefixed, than in the solemn service of this holy Sacrament, wherein we more especially remember our dearest Lord, in a feast of his own appointment; which we cannot better do, than by addressing, in his own name and words, saying, 'Our Father, ' &c. In explaining therefore of this divine form, I must consider the three parts of it, viz. the Preface, the Petitions, and the Conclusion. Excerpt from Practical Discourses on the Liturgy of the Church of England, Vol. 2 The words are part of Solomon's prayer at the dedication of the temple; when, having built a stately structure for the honour of his Maker, and solemnly dedicated it to his glory and service, he beseeches him to hear the prayers of his people offered up in that holy place, and to give a gracious answer to them, as their necessities should require. Among other things, he desires him to hear their prayers in times of drought, when the earth is parched and gapes for lack of moisture; when heaven is shut up, and there is no rain, then he prays him to hear from heaven, and to give rain upon the land. Accordingly our Church hath composed a form of prayer for that purpose, willing us to offer it up to God upon such occasions; which prayer I am now to explain to you, and to that end shall observe, - First, The preface, in these words; 'O God, heavenly Father, who by thy Son Jesus Christ hath promised to all them that seek thy kingdom, and the righteousness thereof, all things necessary to their bodily sustenance.' Secondly, The petition; 'Send us, we beseech thee, in this our necessity, some moderate rain and showers.' Thirdly, The end and design of it; 'That we may receive the fruits of the earth, to our comfort, and to thy honour, through Jesus Christ our Lord.' These are the parts of this prayer which must be distinctly handled. And I begin with the preface: 'O God, heavenly Father, ' &c. Where, 1st, We come unto God by the title of 'Father, ' as children do to their parents, to ask what is needful for them; which they are wont to do with great boldness, knowing that their natural and tender affections will incline them to compassionate and relieve their wants. And if earthly parents know how to give good gifts unto their children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to them that ask them? But because earthly parents, how willing soever they may be, are many times unable to supply the wants of their children; therefore, 2dly, we here address to God in the style of 'heavenly Father: ' who having 'all power in heaven and earth, ' is able to do 'more abundantly than we can ask or think.' And that he is as willing as able to furnish us with all necessaries, appears, 3dly, by the 'promise' in the next words; of giving 'to all them that seek his kingdom and the righteousness thereof, all things necessary to their bodily sustenance.' This promise of the Father is here said to be made 'by his Son Jesus Christ, ' and is accordingly extant in his Sermon on the Mount; where he bids us to 'seek first the kingdom of God and the righteousness thereof, and then all these things shall be added unto us.' Excerpt from A Family Liturgy: Designed for the Use of Members of the Church of England in the Diocese of Toronto Schools, and it might also be used with advantage in the visitation of Hospitals and Gaols, where time might not be allowed for the use of the full Morning or Evening Prayer. In the Appendix at the conclu sion of the volume, special prayers will be found adapted to such occasional services.
