"This new edition of The ECT Handbook comes six years after the publication of the 3rd edition. In the intervening period there have been no major changes in the practice of electroconvulsive therapy, but continuing research has provided good new evidence on the optimal use of ECT in the treatment of mental disorders. This edition of the Handbook contains new chapters on ECT for bipolar depression, ECT in pregnancy and postnatally, ECT in children and adolescents and on the use of ketamine in treatment resistant depression. Many of the other chapters have been completely re-written by new authors and all have been substantially revised to include new evidence published until the end of 2018. There have been further developments to try to resolve the question about whether unilateral or bilateral ECT should be the initial technique when ECT is used in the treatment of depression and these are considered in Chapter 3. Other important new research has been conducted in the use of ECT in the treatment of bipolar depression and resistant schizophrenia and this is discussed in Chapters 5 and 10. We had expected a major revision of the guidance on the management of depression from the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) to be published before this volume in 2018 but its publication has been delayed. There has been a significant change in mental health law in Northern Ireland, which may have implications for other legislatures, but this has not come into force at the time that the Handbook goes to print"--

Catatonia In Autism Spectrum Disorders written by Dirk Marcel Dhossche and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-03-14 with Medical categories.

The study of catatonia in Autism Spectrum Disorders is a novel and controversial topic. Catatonia is a motor disorder characterized by stereotypy, rigidity, mutism, and posturing. These motor signs are also characteristic of autism. The interest in the relation between autism and catatonia stems from clinical observations that autistic and catatonic symptoms overlap, that some people with autism develop full-blown catatonia, and that anti-catatonic treatments bring relief in some of those patients. Catatonia in Autism Spectrum Disorders explores the question of if the two syndromes have a common pathophysiology. It also examines whether the successful treatment of catatonia be applied to patients with both autism and catatonia. The book concludes with blueprints for the assessment, treatment, and future study of catatonia in Autism Spectrum Disorders. These blueprints aim to increase early recognition and treatment of catatonia in patients with autism, show the urgency of controlled treatment trials and increased collaborative and interdisciplinary research into the co-occurrence of these two enigmatic disorders. - Provides a historical perspective of the concepts of catatonia and autism, as described by old European masters like Bleuler and Kalhbaum - Presents clinical-epidemiological studies that apply systematic criteria of catatonia in populations with Autism Spectrum Disorders - Includes a review of the importance of psychomotor function for normal and abnormal development

Electroconvulsive Therapy In America written by Jonathan Sadowsky and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-11-03 with History categories.

Electroconvulsive Therapy is widely demonized or idealized. Some detractors consider its very use to be a human rights violation, while some promoters depict it as a miracle, the "penicillin of psychiatry." This book traces the American history of one of the most controversial procedures in medicine, and seeks to provide an explanation of why ECT has been so controversial, juxtaposing evidence from clinical science, personal memoir, and popular culture. Contextualizing the controversies about ECT, instead of simply engaging in them, makes the history of ECT more richly revealing of wider changes in culture and medicine. It shows that the application of electricity to the brain to treat illness is not only a physiological event, but also one embedded in culturally patterned beliefs about the human body, the meaning of sickness, and medical authority.
