This voluminous publication aims to satisfy a great need of those phycologists who do research on the fresh-water Rhodophycophyta for a compendium which provides quick and easy access to the scientific names associated with this group of little known plants. While relatively small numerically, the Rhodophycophyta may be, in themselves, of little significance, it may be of interest to the reader to note that there are approximately 4000 known species of the Rhodophycophyta and that these are distributed into some 600 genera. The vast majority, by far, are inhabitants of the marine environment. Of this number, however, about 62 genera with an estimated 600 species are found in non-marine habitats. It is on this small group of genera that this contribution is focused. The author intends to accomplish at least five desirable goals. The first of these is a simple alphabetical listing, the Â_quick listÂ_, of the taxonomic of Rhodophycophyta to accommodate the taxa that will give to the user a birdÂ_s-eye view of what may be available herein. The second goal is an alphabetical listing to the complete nomenclatural and taxonomic citations of the included taxa which includes taxonomic name, author, date of publication, journal or book reference. A third goal is to provide a comprehensive bibliography for each of the numerous papers cited in the nomenclatural and taxonomic index. The fourth major objective was to provide to the user an alphabetical index to taxonomic names, enabling the reader to trace the fate of a given epithet, mostly species, varietas and formae through their tortuous journey, for some, which they may have undergone since their initial publication. The fifth and last objective is to review the 62 currently recognized genera of this freshwater group (pp 351-914) to help place these into their respective, contemporary status.

This book presents the phylogeny, taxonomy and biogeography of freshwater red algae. Its content is divided into five chapters. The first chapter provides a brief history of freshwater red algal research, habits and collecting methods, general biogeographic trends and an overview of the taxonomic/phylogenetic placement of freshwater taxa. The other four chapters are taxonomic treatments of non-marine red algae based on taxonomic levels, i.e. classes within the phylum Rhodophyta, orders within each class, families within each order, and genera within each family. Descriptions, phylogenetic data (including numerous trees), geographic range (maps for most species) and dichotomous keys for identification are presented. Comprehensive data are provided for more than 220 species.

Marine Algae Of The Northern Gulf Of California Ii written by James N. Norris and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with Marine algae categories.

The present treatment constitutes a taxonomic study of the benthic marine red algae known in the northern Gulf of California. In all, 380 species of Rhodophyta belonging to two subphyla were found: the Rhodophytina represented by 2 classes, 2 orders, 2 families, 7 genera, and 14 species; and, the Eurhodophytina represented by 2 classes, 5 subclasses, 19 orders, 45 families, 132 genera, and 366 species. Of the red algae 67 are endemic species. Along with the 133 species of Chlorophyta and Phaeophyceae in the northern Gulf (Norris 2010) there are now 512 benthic marine macroalgal species known in the northern Gulf. The systematic account includes the accepted taxon name, descriptions of the subphyla, classes, orders, families, genera, and species of red algae presently known in the northern Gulf, with Keys to serve as a guide to their identification. Along with the current name for each species are its basionym, synonyms, type locality, relevant taxonomic studies, description, habitat, and distribution in the Gulf of California, and if applicable (i.e., not endemic) in the Eastern Pacific, Central Pacific, and/or Western Pacific. In addition to reviewing the taxonomic phycological literature pertinent to the Gulf of California and Pacific Mexico, several distribution extensions and new records are given. One new genus, one new subgeneric section, and eight new species are described. One new species name is given to replace an illegitimate name. Twenty-seven new combinations are made.

r ed Algae in Genome Age book most people reading this book have childhood memories about being enthralled at the beach with those rare and mysterious living forms we knew as seaweeds. We were fascinated at that time by their range of red hues and textures, and most of all, their exotic beauty. t o a scientist, red algae represent much more than apparent features. t heir complex forms have attracted morphologists for centuries; their intricate life cycles have brought more than one surprise to plant biologists familiar only with ferns and fowering plants; their unusual tastes have been appreciated for mill- nia, and their valuable chemical constituents have been exploited for nearly as long, most recently by biotech companies; their diversity in marine, freshwater, and t- restrial environments has offered centuries of engaging entertainment for botanists eager to arrange them in orderly classifcation systems; still, the red algae continue to teach us how many more challenges need to be overcome in order to understand their biodiversity, biological functions, and evolutionary histories.

When Biology of the Red Algae was first published in 1990, it was the first comprehensive monograph to be written on the Rhodophyta in over fifteen years. This book presents an authoritative review on the state of knowledge on the biology of the red algae. Written by a group of 26 internationally renowned experts, the eighteen chapters of Biology of the Red Algae range from molecular and cellular to biochemical, physiological, organismal, and ecological aspects of this important group of algae. Together they will be of interest for students of oceanography and plant evolution.

Fundamentals Of Palaeobotany written by Sergei Meyen and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Science categories.

There have been at least ten English-language textbooks of palaeobotany since D. H. Scott published the first edition of Studies inFossilBotany in 1900. Most have been written by scientists who were primarily botanists by training, and were aimed largely at a readership familiar with living plants. They tended to follow a general pattern of an introductory chapter on preservation of plants as fossils, followed by a systematic treatment, group by group. Only Seward in his Plant Life Through the Ages departed from this pattern in presenting a chronological sequence. In the present book, Meyen breaks with?is tradition. Although having a basically biological approach, he reaches out into all aspects of the history of plant life and the wider implication of its study. Only half of the present work deals sequentially with fossil plant groups, treated systematically. The remainder then explores those topics which most other textbooks have incidentally??e generally either ignored or have only mentioned rather problems of naming and classifying fragmentary plant fossils, their ecology; biogeography and palaeoclimatic significance and the contribution that?ey have made to the understanding of living plant morphology, and of the process of evolution.
