Excerpt from Handbuch der Systematischen Botanik, Vol. 1: Mit Besonderer Berucksichtigung der Arzneipflanzen; Kryptogamen Die vorliegende medicinisch-pharmaceutische Botanik bringt ihren Stoff in etwas weiterem Umfange, als dieses gewohnlich zu geschehen pflegt. Auf Grundlage der wichtigeren, auf S. VIII namhaft gemachten Pharmacopoen bearbeitet, soll sie in erster Linie die genauere Kenntniss der Arzneipflanzen anbahnen, nicht nur der betreffenden Arten, sondern auch der Gattungen, Familien und grosseren Gruppen, denen erstere nach ihrer naturlichen Verwandtschaft angehoren. Dass hierbei nicht die rein ausserlichen Charaktere allein, sondern uberall, wo es geboten ist, auch Anatomie und Entwickelungsgeschichte Berucksichtigung finden, bedarf bei dem jetzigen Standpunkte der Botanik wohl kaum einer Rechtfertigung. Ebenso braucht der Verfasser sich wohl nicht specieller uber die Grunde auszusprechen, die ihn bestimmten, das Werk gleichzeitig zu einem Handbuche der systematischen Botanik auszudehnen. Schon der Umstand, dass lurch eine solche Bearbeitung die so wie so zu erlauternden Verwandtschaftsverhaltnisse der medicinisch wichtigen Familien weit besser hervortreten, durfte dafur sprechen, abgesehen davon, dass die Brauchbarkeit des Buches dadurch fur Alle erhoht wird, welche uber keine grosseren literarischen Hulfsmittel zu gebieten haben und doch etwas mehr lernen mochten, als gesetzlich vorgeschrieben ist. Dabei sind jedoch in Folge der speciellen Bestimmung des Werkes die arzneilich wichtigen Gruppen einer ausfuhrlicheren Schilderung unterworfen worden, als die ubrigen Familien etc., soweit letztere nicht vom allgemeineren Standpunkte aus ein grosseres Interesse beanspruchen. Dass diese beiderlei Rucksichten ausserlich durch den verschiedenen Druck kenntlich gemacht sind, insofern die Arzneipflanzen enthaltenden Ordnungen, Familien und Gattungen, sowie die Beschreibungen der Arzneigewachse der hier in erster Linie berucksichtigten Pharmacopoea germanica selbst, durch grossere Schrift ausgezeichnet wurden, geschah in Hinsicht auf die raschere Orientirung beim Nachschlagen des Buches.
