This issue of Handshake focuses on natural resource PPPs that are making a difference. In Cartagena, Colombia, a hybrid public-private agency is profiled that has standardized water service to residents while restoring the coast, and in the process, contributed to political stabilization. Around Africas Lake Victoria, an environmental management initiative with the potential to reduce the pollution and resource footprint of industrial activities demonstrates how to include commercial ventures in conservation. This issue also draws inspiration from the thoughtfulness of conservationists who know the path forward depends on partnerships. From 2014 Stockholm Water Laureate John Briscoe, who has spent his career making sure taps are turned on, to science correspondent M. Sanjayan, whose call to action came in the rainy forest of Sierra Leone, to Jean-Michel Cousteau, who founded the Ocean Futures Society to carry on his family s stewardship of the sea, the interviews in Handshake give voice to the ways people are connected to nature, and how our survival depends on the continuation of this connection. Original articles from the FAO and The Rockefeller Foundation outline how Payments for Ecosystem Services, or PES, brings PPPs benefits directly to farmers, fishers, and those who maintain forests. This issue includes the following headlines: Ambassador of the sea Jean-Michel Cousteaus case for sustainable fisheries; A turning point for trees: Can the Amazon s forests be saved?; Restoring Cartagenas coast: A mixed-capitol model revitalizes land and sea; Impact investing: The Rockefeller Foundation dips its toes into oceans; Against A vision of perfection: John Briscoe argues for incremental solutions.

In 1981 Robert John Russell founded what would become the leading center of research at the interface of science and religion, the Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences. Throughout its twenty-five year history, CTNS under Russell's leadership has continued to guide and further the dialogue between science and theology. Russell has been an articulate spokesperson in calling for "creative mutual interaction" between the two fields. God's Action in Nature's World brings together sixteen internationally-recognized scholars to assess Robert Russell's impact on the discipline of science and religion. Focusing on three areas of Russell's work - methodology, cosmology, and divine action in quantum physics - this book celebrates Robert John Russell's contribution to the interdisciplinary engagement between the natural sciences and theology.

Ignoring Nature No More written by Marc Bekoff and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-01 with Science categories.

For far too long humans have been ignoring nature. As the most dominant, overproducing, overconsuming, big-brained, big-footed, arrogant, and invasive species ever known, we are wrecking the planet at an unprecedented rate. And while science is important to our understanding of the impact we have on our environment, it alone does not hold the answers to the current crisis, nor does it get people to act. In Ignoring Nature No More, Marc Bekoff and a host of renowned contributors argue that we need a new mind-set about nature, one that centers on empathy, compassion, and being proactive. This collection of diverse essays is the first book devoted to compassionate conservation, a growing global movement that translates discussions and concerns about the well-being of individuals, species, populations, and ecosystems into action. Written by leading scholars in a host of disciplines, including biology, psychology, sociology, social work, economics, political science, and philosophy, as well as by locals doing fieldwork in their own countries, the essays combine the most creative aspects of the current science of animal conservation with analyses of important psychological and sociocultural issues that encourage or vex stewardship. The contributors tackle topics including the costs and benefits of conservation, behavioral biology, media coverage of animal welfare, conservation psychology, and scales of conservation from the local to the global. Taken together, the essays make a strong case for why we must replace our habits of domination and exploitation with compassionate conservation if we are to make the world a better place for nonhuman and human animals alike.

Restoring Nature written by Lary M. Dilsaver and has been published by U of Nebraska Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023 with Nature categories.

Off the coast of California, running from Santa Barbara to La Jolla, lies an archipelago of eight islands known as the California Channel Islands. The northern five were designated as Channel Islands National Park in 1980 to protect and restore the rich habitat of the islands and surrounding waters. In the years since, that mission intensified as scientists discovered the extent of damage to the delicate habitats of these small fragments of land and to the surprisingly threatened sea around them. In Restoring Nature Lary M. Dilsaver and Timothy J. Babalis examine how the National Park Service has attempted to reestablish native wildlife and vegetation to the five islands through restorative ecology and public land management. The Channel Islands staff were innovators of the inventory and monitoring program whereby the resource problems were exposed. This program became a blueprint for management throughout the U.S. park system. Dilsaver and Babalis present an innovative regional and environmental history of a little-known corner of the Pacific West, as well as a larger national narrative about how the Park Service developed its approach to restoration ecology, which became a template for broader Park Service policies that shaped the next generation of environmental conservation.
