Hanged at York gathers together the stories of criminals hanged at York from the middle of the eighteenth century to the late nineteenth century when Leeds superseded York as the place where capital punishment was carried out. Then condemned featured here range from coiners and forgers to murderers, thieves and highwaymen, the most infamous being Dick Turpin, who was hanged on York's Knavesmire in 1739 for horse-stealing. As was the custom at that time, the execution was carried out by a condemned prisoner who had been pardoned on condition that he would act as hangman. Probably the most famous female execution at York was that of the 'Yorkshire Witch', Mary Bateman, who was convicted of poisoning Rebecca Pergio in 1808 and hanged in 1809. Up to 1856, York Castle was the principal place of execution for persons convicted in all three Ridings of Yorkshire. There was also another gallows in York, at the City Gaol, and it was here that David Anderson was hanged for 'uttering' forged banknotes in 1809. Stephen Wade's highly readable new book is fully illustrated with photographs, news cuttings and engravings. It is bound to appeal to anyone interested in the darker side of York's history.

‘For the sake of decency, gentlemen, don't hang me high.’ This was the last request of modest murderess Mary Blandy, who was hanged for poisoning her father in 1752. Concerned that the young men in the crowd who had thronged to see her execution might look up her skirts as she was ‘turned off’ by the hangman, this last nod to propriety might appear farcical in one who was about to meet her maker. Yet this was just another aspect of a case which attracted so much public attention in its day that some determined spectators even went to the lengths of climbing through the courtroom windows to get a glimpse of Mary while on trial. Indeed her case remained newsworthy for the best part of 1752, for months garnering endless scrutiny and mixed reaction in the popular press. Opinions are certainly still divided on the matter of Mary’s ‘intention’ in the poisoning of her father, and the extent to which her coercive lover, Captain William Cranstoun, was responsible for this murder by proxy. Yet Mary Blandy’s trial was also notable in that it was the first time that detailed medical evidence had been presented in a court of law on a charge of murder by poisoning, and the first time that any court had accepted toxicological evidence in an arsenic poisoning case. The forensic legacy of the acceptance of Dr Anthony Addington’s application of chemistry to a criminal investigation is another compelling aspect of The First Forensic Hanging.

On August 5, 1639, Gregory Peterson, a soldier at the Fort Amsterdam garrison, was executed by a firing squad for an unknown act of mutiny. Peterson was the first person known to be executed in what was to become New York. All known executions conducted in or by the estate of New York from 1639 through 1963 are covered here. In 1963 the last execution occurred before the state formally abolished the death penalty in 1965 (and reinstated it in 1995). Arranged chronologically, each entry includes the executed person's name and race, and the crime for which he or she was sentenced to death. This is followed by details of the crime and information on the place and method of execution.

The London Hanged written by Peter Linebaugh and has been published by Verso Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-05 with History categories.

Peter Linebaugh's groundbreaking history has become an inescapable part of any understanding of the rise of capitalism. In eighteenth-century London the spectacle of a hanging was not simply a form of punishing transgressors. Rather it evidently served the most sinister purpose-for a prvileged ruling class-of forcing the poor population of London to accept the criminalization of customary rights and the new forms of private property. Necessity drove the city's poor into inevitable conflict with the changing property laws, such that all the working-class men and women of London had good reason to fear the example of Tyburn's Triple Tree. In this new edition Peter Linebaugh reinforces his original arguments with responses to his critics based on an impressive array of historical sources. As the trend of capital punishment intensifies with the spread of global capitalism, The London Hanged also gains in contemporary relevance.
