The significance of Hannah Ryggen (1894-1970) as one of the most important figures in the history of Scandinavian art has only recently been recognized internationally. Beloved and renowned for her original contributions to modernist tapestry, Ryggen made radical political statements against Fascism and Nazism before and during the Second World War. Using primary sources, Ryggen expert Marit Paasche brings us a much fuller knowledge of the artist, weaving her life and work into a story that illuminates not only the artist herself, but also 20th-century art history in general. Hannah Ryggen's visually spellbinding tapestries, made on a homemade handloom in her small farm on the remote Norwegian coast, depict a wealth of subjects: Mussolini's Abyssinian campaign, her husband's internment in a Nazi camp in occupied Norway, the post-war growth of nuclear power, and media coverage of the Vietnam War. At once hard-hitting and humorous, her works combine personal candour, social and political engagement and visual majesty. Paasche explores both the artist's bold subject matter and particular balance of abstraction and figuration within the context of her life and beliefs. Including a comprehensive selection of works, this book provides an enthralling account of a remarkable, and unjustly overlooked, artist.

It includes works from her entire oeuvre, with an emphasis on tapestries from the 1930s pertaining to her political and social engagement.During the past few years the tapestries of Hannah Ryggen have been widely acclaimed. In 2012 six of her principal tapestries from the 1930s were exhibited at dOCUMENTA (13) in Kassel where they received much attention.Ryggen's tapestries appear as visual reactions to global political issues as well as small scale trials and incidents. Her approach can be associated with modern history painting in the tradition of Goya and Manet. The works are furthermore characterized by a genuine craftsmanship and a desire to communicate directly with the viewer.Published on the occasion of the exhibition Hannah Ryggen: Weaving the world at Nasjonalmuseet, Oslo (12 June - 4 October 2015), and at Moderna Museet, Malmö (31 October 2015 - 6 March 2016).English and Norwegian text.

Discover the tapestries of Hannah Ryggen, one of the most influential Scandinavian artists of the 20th century. Hannah Ryggen created numerous monumental tapestries in her lifetime. Originally trained as a painter, Ryggen began weaving on a standing loom on her self-sufficient farm on the West coast of Norway. She challenged the formal traditions of Norwegian 17th- and 18th-century textile folk art, combining figurative and abstract elements. She also experimented with and developed colors using local plants and other materials she foraged. Her tapestries bravely tackled the social issues of the time, from the atrocities of war to the abuse of power. She created work in direct response to Hitler, Franco, and Mussolini and made powerful statements of support to the victims of Fascism and Nazism. This book features about 25 of Ryggen's signature tapestries including Etiopia (Ethiopia), Drømmedød (Death of Dreams), and Vi lever på en stjerne (We Are Living on a Star). It shows her work representing a different kind of modernism where elements of folk art and mythology are mixed with contemporary life. Haunting and powerful, Ryggen's work was unprecedented at the time, as it expressed her political messages to the public.
