A urmat initial studii de matematica la universitatea din orasul natal si a lucrat ca matematician intre 1974 si 1978; a debutat in 1978, in gazete literare, iar din 1978 s-a dedicat in intregime scrisului. " Le destin de sa propre famille, une des plus anciennes et plus puissantes d'Europe, sert ici de canevas à Péter Esterhazy pour un imposant projet romanesque. Dans une première partie fourmillant d'anecdotes tour à tour drôles ou graves - qui reprennent les morceaux réels ou fictifs d'une histoire familiale qui se confond avec l'Histoire d'un empire - il crée un puzzle fascinant, un abrégé de toutes les passions humaines. La seconde partie se présente comme un récit biographique et autobiographique retraçant l'histoire des Esterhazy depuis la prise de pouvoir par les communistes en 1919. Le ton du livre est iconoclaste, drôle, insolent, mais l'enjeu du romancier est clairement lisible : retrouver son identité sous le poids de l'Histoire, en l'occurrence celle de ses ancêtres et de son pays.
