Whispers of Betrayal: Unearthing Hawaii's Stolen Paradise explores the dark history of this beautiful archipelago, shedding light on the injustices that have been inflicted upon its indigenous people. It is a compelling narrative that seeks to spark empathy and ignite a sense of responsibility toward rectifying the wrongs of the past. For too long, the world has seen Hawaii solely as a tropical paradise, a haven of beauty and tranquility. But beneath its picturesque landscapes lies a complex tapestry of colonization, exploitation, and deceit. This book serves as a wake-up call to humanity, urging us to acknowledge the injustices committed against the Hawaiian people. It is a reminder that even in the most idyllic locations, darkness can lurk, and histories can be erased to serve the interests of the powerful. As humans, we have a responsibility to confront and learn from the past. By shining a light on Hawaii's stolen paradise and the dark chapters it holds, we hope to inspire a collective effort towards justice and reconciliation. It is time to acknowledge the voices that have been silenced and to heal the wounds inflicted upon this stolen paradise. I invite you to embrace the Aloha Spirit, not just as tourists but as compassionate and conscientious global citizens of Earth.

Would you like to learn the history of Hawaiʻi, and get to know its culture and traditions through the convenience of a book? This one has it all: photographs, stories, and history, all told by a traveler who wanted to study that firsthand. What she compiled is a fun way to learn about Hawaiʻi, the result of her own, self-taught course about the Islands. It includes a bibliography and a glossary of Hawaiian words and phrases at the end, complete with a pronunciation key. As a bonus, the names, addresses, phone numbers, and websites of the places she visited are listed in the bibliographies of both San Francisco - a stop along the way to Hawaiʻi - and for Hawaiʻi itself. Here is a brief summary of the fun described in this travelogue: In October of 2012, the author and her parents took a trip to Hawai‘i, visiting O‘ahu and the Big Island. They stayed at a beautiful resort on O‘ahu called Ko Olina, which means “to be filled with happiness” in the Hawaiian language. They toured historic sites - ‘Iolani Palace in Honolulu and Hulihe‘e Palace in Kailua-Kona. They visited the dead sailors aboard the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial. They took a ride in an electric submarine in the waters off Waikiki. They drove down Saddle Road between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island, and then down Chain of Craters Road to see where Kilauea had erupted over the pavement and into the Pacific Ocean. They tasted Kona coffee and saw how it was grown, harvested, dried, and roasted. They attended a hokey lu‘au on O‘ahu and a wonderfully educational one on the Big Island. They walked through a tropical garden on each of the Islands that they visited, looking at orchids, butterflies, palm trees, macadamia trees, and cannonball trees. In short, the author led her parents on a fascinating tour of Hawaiian history, language, music, cuisine, culture, botany, zoology, and volcanology. It was the trip of a lifetime. After all, one can never taste, smell, hear, see, or touch enough of the paradise that is Hawai‘i.

But when he travels to Hawaii with his reluctant father Jack, to visit Jack's dying, estranged sister it feels more like purgatory than paradise. Surrounded by quarrelling honeymooners, a freeloading anthropologist and assorted tourists in search of their own personal paradise, and with his father whisked off to hospital after an unfortunate accident, Bernard is beginning to regret ever coming to Haiwaii. Until, that is, he stumbles on something he had given up hope of finding: the astonishing possibility of love.

At The Beach written by Jean-Didier Urbain and has been published by U of Minnesota Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Social Science categories.

Around the world, when people think of vacation it's the beach they want--even when long distances must be traversed, the seashore is the place to escape the rigors of modern life. How did this come to be, and what does our ongoing love affair with the beach mean? How do shore vacations differ from traditional tourism, and what does this tell us about our fears and dreams? In At the Beach, Jean-Didier Urbain offers witty and insightful answers to these questions. Urbain traces the transformation of the beach from a place of mythological threats and a demanding workplace fraught with danger to a destination for medical treatment and the pursuit of pleasure. He looks to the emergence of the modern vacation in the nineteenth century, examines representations of beachgoing in literature and the arts, and shows the transgressive side of beach culture--from nudism to hedonism to various "scandals" about costume, behavior, and sexuality that make the beach the site of social spectacle as well as leisure. Urbain's ultimate focus is the paradoxical enterprise of the residential seaside vacationer, who travels in order to stay in one place and who leaves the everyday world behind to reconstruct an idealized version of it at the shore. He argues that unlike tourists, who move from place to place, beach vacationers are not seeking to explore nature, to discover other cultures, or even to "get away from it all"; rather, they are attempting to re-create their own identities through a simplified community they can no longer find elsewhere. Blending history with social observation, Urbain presents an original, incisive, and entertaining account of this enduring ritual of escape and recreation.
