He knew very well that it would be better for him to return and ask the aid of the man whose life he had sought than to have any dealings with the slow and exacting Officials of Scotland Yard. It was this that made Mr Jones SO confident when he said to Strong: He will come back. The accident of Strong's introduction to the incident was, of course, annoying; but Mr Jones felt quite sure of his silence, and saw no need for disclosing the cherished secret of his identity. Here, however, he made a miscalculation, for Mr Montgomery Jones' secret was quite well known to Strong. It was this knowledge, indeed, which to some extent had made the flirtation with Miss Diana Montgomery Jones so inexpressibly sweet. It is not every day that one can dally with a princess in disguise. For this strange young man possessed a certain element of romance, which, if it is present in men of action, produces great results. And romance is after all only imagination, which John Oliver Hobbes said she had found more keenly developed in men of affairs than in poets. And Strong, though at that time no one ever dreamed it, was essentially a man of affairs. He was for the time a dreamer-a lazy troubadour waiting to be stung into action by necessity; and when the sting that produces action comes to the man of imagination the world is apt to know of it. His best-known sister was the Margravine of Baireuth (died in 1757), authoress of the celebrated Memoirs. Frederick the Great was succeeded by his nephew. Frederick William II, 1786-1797. He was the notorious bigamist and debt-contractor. He was succeeded by his son. Frederick William III, 1797-1840. He was the husband of Queen Louise, a Princess of Strelitz (died in 1810), and the father of his successors. Frederick William IV, 1840-1861. This King became mad and died childless. A daughter of his brother William (died 1846), Princess Marie, married Maximilian II, King of Bavaria. Queen Marie (died 1889) had two sons, - Ludwig II, King of Bavaria, who died insane in 1886, and the present King Otto of Bavaria, who is also insane. Frederick William IV was succeeded by his brother. William I, King, 1861-1888. Became German Emperor in 1871. The Queen and Empress of William I was Augusta, Princess of Sachsen-Weimar, and a granddaughter (on her mother's side) of Czar Paul I, who died insane. William I had a daughter, Louise, now Grand Duchess of Baden, and was succeeded by his son. Frederick III, March-June, 1888. His widowed Empress and Queen, styled Empress Frederick, is the oldest daughter of Queen Victoria of England, and was born in 1840. Her children are: William II, Emperor and King, since June, 1888; Charlotte, born 1860, Hereditary Princess of Sachsen-Meiningen; Prince Henry of Prussia, born 1862, married to Irene of Hesse, sister of the Czarina; Victoria, born 1866, Princess of Lippe; Sophie, born 1870, Crown Princess of Greece; Marguerite, born 1872, Princess Frederick Charles of Hesse-Cassel, William II was married to the late Auguste Victoria, born 1858, eldest daughter of Frederick, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg. That may seem a hard saying, but it is a fact which becomes apparent to belligerents and neutrals when war is in progress. Nothing contributes more powerfully to the recognition of that truth than the varying claims and objections which are raised whenever a blockade is declared. The late Lord Salisbury, in a speech on the proposal to establish an International Court of Arbitration, he being at the time Prime Minister of England, remarked that international law has no existence in the sense in which the term 'law is usually understood. It depends generally upon the, prejudices of writers of textbooks. It can be enforced by no tribunal, and, therefore, to apply to it the phrase 'law, ' is to some extent misleading.
