The Bible as the foundation of the Christian faith, Greek philosophy as the basis of thought, the Age of Enlightenment as the basis of scientific knowledge - the three pillars of today's view of the world. That philosophy began with the ancient Greeks is just as invented as the myth of the Sea Peoples, who ushered in the end of the Bronze Age. Nor does the story of the Flood originate from the Bible. The Age of Enlightenment not only destroyed a medieval view of the world, but at the same time created new myths that are rarely questioned even today. With a good portion of irony, the stories are scrutinised and filleted. Where they come from and since when they have been told holds the one or other surprise. We accompany the first archaeologists to Nineveh and take part in a Greek symposium with Herodotus. We meet Rousseau in Annecy and learn what 'Haute Cousine' and 'Guillotine' have in common. We attend Hegel's lectures in Berlin and accompany Wallace to Borneo. From Noah to Kant, from Uruk to Ulm, from Cinderella to flying orangutans, the stories are so numerous that one or two souvenirs are likely to remain from this journey through time.

Beebe was a very well-connected and internationally acclaimed naturalist, with the power to generate media attention. Barton was an engineer and heir to a considerable fortune, who had long dreamed of making his mark on the world as an adventurer. Together, Beebe and Barton would achieve what no one had done before--direct observation of life in the blackness of the abyss. Here, against the back drop of the depression, is their riveting tale.

The Portal is unnatural, a fissure in spacetime, torn between sharp rings. The Portal shows you images that haunt your waking moments, as well as your dreams. The Portal wants you to gaze within, but when you do, you will never be the same. When the Order of Nirangi opens a portal into a hellish realm, they tempt far more than fate. Hidden deep underground, a ringed machine tears into the fabric of spacetime itself, showing the Nirangi scientists a glimpse into a realm covered in roiling lava lakes and volcanos, leaving them petrified and humbled. Only Madam Viragat, the project overseer, is unconcerned, clearly bent on using their recording of the glimpse to scare the populous into submission. Despite incomplete data, she insists that the hellish realm they saw was the spiritual abyss, the fate of the unsanctified after death. Only Sujan, a brilliant young scientist, is willing to investigate further. To his shock, he makes a discovery that rocks his world to its core.

THE EXPERIENCES RELATED in this volume fell to me in the summer of 1902. I went down into the under-world of London with an attitude of mind which I may best liken to that of the explorer. I was open to be convinced by the evidence of my eyes, rather than by the teachings of those who had not seen, or by the words of those who had seen and gone before. Further, I took with me certain simple criteria with which to measure the life of the under-world. That which made for more life, for physical and spiritual health, was good; that which made for less life, which hurt, and dwarfed, and distorted life, was bad. It will be readily apparent to the reader that I saw much that was bad. Yet it must not be forgotten that the time of which I write was considered 'good times' in England. The starvation and lack of shelter I encountered constituted a chronic condition of misery which is never wiped out, even in the periods of greatest prosperity. Following the summer in question came a hard winter. To such an extent did the suffering and positive starvation increase that society was unable to cope with it. Great numbers of the unemployed formed into processions, as many as a dozen at a time, and daily marched through the streets of London crying for bread. Mr. Justin McCarthy, writing in the month of January, 1903, to the New York Independent, briefly epitomizes the situation as follows:-

After struggling to discover his power, Abyss is tasked with an epic quest to seal the God of Fire, assisted with the immortal huntress Diana and many mysteries from the animal kingdom. Along the way, he meets the half-siblings Inder and Latis, while an ancient Pharaoh desires to mold the boy for devious purposes. Abyss is caught up in the secret, hectic crossfire between the Witch-selected heroes and the golden-armored clerics, and unearths a strange diamond blade while defending himself from enemies. His action breaks the seal of the God of Fire, who threatens to throw the world into strife and chaos. As he journeys across the land to redeem himself, Abyss stumbles across many who would seek his power. A resurrected tribal warlord demands that Abyss follow his ancestors’ path of war and conquest, while the Pharaoh’s servant, Grigory, sees him as a tool to purify and strengthen humanity. As he discovers his shortcomings and weaknesses in his perilous journey, many of his peers judge him to be incompetent and question fate itself. Plants, animals, and even space-time itself warp around Abyss as he continues to borrow animal parts from various species. In spite of his enemies and doubters, Abyss continues to persevere in his quest. For no matter how chaotic and uncertain the future may seem, destiny is not something that merely calls, but is something that is to be forged.

As I wondered towards the West I saw a bird that came to rest In its sticks filled nest The nest was high in the trees Made of thorns and weeds From the nest young bird fell I thought his wing was not well I took the bird back to my house Although not sure if it was wise To the store, I went to get some food However, the bird ate only when he was in the right mood It did not cost me a large wealth In addition, the bird seemed to return to health It however was not a broken wing that made the bird wobble It was his labyrinth that unraveled The bird died next day It is nature’s laws I heard someone say The nature’s law this time seemed cruel In this case, it is hard to keep cool. I hope to the heaven the young bird went In any case, I will miss my little friend.

"[...] “Never mind that,” I interposed, to save myself from being swept out of the office by his flood of negations. “Here's something you can do for me. I wish you to understand in advance what I intend doing, so that in case of trouble you may be able to identify me.” “Ah, I see! should you be murdered, we would be in position to identify the corpse.” He said it so cheerfully and cold-bloodedly that on the instant I saw my stark and mutilated cadaver stretched upon a slab where cool waters trickle ceaselessly, and him I saw bending over and sadly and patiently identifying it as the body of the insane American who would see the East End. “No, no,” I answered; “merely to identify me in case I get into a scrape[...]".

The Abyss written by Niall Ferguson and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-10-23 with History categories.

Excerpted from Niall Ferguson’s sprawling bestseller The War of the World, The Abyss now stands on its own as one of the most thrilling short histories of World War I ever written. This is not a conventional military history about battles and generals. Rather, The Abyss examines how World War I saw the birth of total war—fought between societies as much as armies—and must therefore be understood in terms of the financial crises it unleashed, the multinational empires it destroyed, and the hateful ideas it propagated. The most remarkable thing about the war, Ferguson shows us, is how shockingly unexpected it was. At a time when economic integration and technology seemed to be rendering war between great powers impossible, World War I was the moment when that process went into reverse and the lethal forces of ethnic disintegration took over. Now, on the cusp of the 100th anniversary of its outbreak, we can see World War I as much more than just four years of industrialized slaughter. Weaving together the economics of empire and the ideology of race—and featuring an original preface by the author as well a teaser from his new paperback Civilization—The Abyss is world history at its finest.
