A biblical perspective on race and how Christians and churches can advance God’s vision for racial unity and justice. The Bible paints a compelling picture of a diverse people united in worship of Jesus. In a society that is divided along lines of race, culture and class, such a vision can feel out of reach. But in the power of the Holy Spirit, it really is possible for our churches to increasingly become the communities of unity and justice that they are called to be. So, what are the practical steps every Christian can take to help make this a reality? This book combines the voices of Jason Roach, Director of Ministries at London City Mission and founding pastor of The Bridge Church, a multi-ethnic church in London, and Jessamin Birdsall, a researcher and consultant with a PhD in Sociology and Social Policy from Princeton University specializing in religion, race and ethnicity, and inequality. Together, they give a biblical perspective on race, ethnicity and justice. Readers will see that in the gospel, Jesus has done something miraculous: he has made us one in him. As well as inspiring readers with God's vision for unity and diversity, this book will help them better understand the experiences of others and become aware of any blind spots in their church culture that may be putting up barriers to inclusivity. It will also help them to engage constructively with the wider conversation in our culture around movements like Black Lives Matter. So be inspired by God’s vision for racial unity and justice, consider things from a different point of view, and play your part in healing the divides—to the glory of God.

Healing the Divide is a bold call to understand Jesus according to the earliest lineage of Christian Mystics--a call to transform our dualistic minds and heal a divided Church. This book is a must-read if you find yourself -frustrated by the fundamentalist and new age polarization of twenty-first-century Christianity; -bewildered by religious pluralism; -searching for Christianity's elusive mystic core. Twenty-first century Christianity is in crisis, careening toward fundamentalism on the one hand and a rootless new age Christianity on the other. Twenty-first century Christianity is also reeling from the maze of religious pluralism. Smith addresses and tempers these extremes by passionately and succinctly revealing Jesus as understood by the Alexandrian mystics. The Alexandrian mystics are the most long standing lineage of early Christian mystics. Their perspective on Jesus celebrates creative tensions, tempers extremes, and reveals Christian mysticism's definitive core.

“I was moved by what I read. I saw things in Scripture I’d never seen before, I saw truths about God and humans and injustice and myself that were new to me, but radically important.” —Annie F. Downs, New York Times Bestselling Author of That Sounds Fun Why must everything be so black and white? Like many of us, Derwin Gray is weary of the racial divide in our society. He longs to see hurts healed, wrongs corrected, and trust replace distrust. The good news is that the Bible has a lot to say about how to heal our persistent racial divides. In this book, popular Bible teacher Derwin Gray walks us through Scripture, showing us the heart of God—how God from the beginning envisioned a reconciled multiethnic family in loving community, reflecting his beauty and healing presence in the world. This message is central to the gospel itself. After reading this book, you won’t read the Bible the same way again—and you’ll want to walk through this eye-opening scriptural journey with your friends or small group. As founding pastor of Transformation Church, a multiethnic church located in the Charlotte metro area, Derwin knows firsthand the hurdles and challenges to the reconciliation that Scripture commands. That is why he carefully outlines in this book how to establish color-blessed discipleship in your own church. Together, we can become the change that God yearns to see in this world.

Can the church help America emerge from its racist shadows empowered to heal racial divides? Church pastor and former police officer Terrell Carter says yes. While our faith inarguably calls Christians to unity, the hard fact remains: we're still tragically divided when it comes to race, even - and especially, many say -- in our churches. Racism pervades our faith, our relationships, and our institutions in deep, often imperceptible ways. In Healing Racial Divides, Terrell Carter, a pastor, professor and former police officer takes us on a revelatory journey into the abyss of the racial divide and shows us how we've arrived at this divisive place. Understanding racism's roots - and our place in it - we surface more committed and empowered to defeat racism once and for all. Drawing from the Bible, scholarly research, and personal experience as a both a former police officer and a black pastor serving white congregations, Carter unpacks the deep roots of racism in America, how it continues to be perpetuated today, and practical strategies for racial reconciliation. Looking forward, he shapes a bold and faithful vision for healing racial division through multicultural communities focused on relationship, listening, and learning from each other. With a pastor's heart and an academic's head, Carter invites us to look at where we've been-and where God calls us as spiritually mature Christians, seeking healing and true unity on earth. In Healing Racial Divides, Terrell Carter helps us: · Understand the roots of racism in the world, the church, and ourselves · Gain a biblical perspective on the sin of racism, as well as the biblical call to Christian unity · Examine how racism continues to be perpetuated in America today · Explore the concept of "white normality" and its aftereffects · Discover a way across the divide through the creation of multi-cultural relationships, churches and communities

The schism in the Church of God has continued for over 500 years, and in that time the world has seen the end of many schisms though they are not united by the same God, yet Christians, united by God, cannot end their division. Much can be learned by considering how the first schism in the Church was ended by the actions of Peter, Paul and the disciples, and how Japan came to forgive America after enduring two atomic bombs, and how the world has forgiven Germans carrying out Hitler's orders to kill over 11 million Jews as well as the many killed in war among the Allied powers. I began this journey on fire for the Lord as a spirit-filled Christian having attended Baptist, Presbyterian and FourSquare churches only to marry into the Catholic church. After going through Catholic formation, I told myself I would never throw out what was wonderful and good about my Christian faith, and would never throw my Protestant brothers and sisters under the bus, but likewise promised the same for my Catholic brothers and sisters. I have always believed that I was Christian first, and my denomination was second. I believe this is key to healing the divide among many other things. As we grow closer to the end times, we must end this divide, as so many in the secular world have already done, shaming the Church of God. We must be able to do this, shocking the world after all this time, and do the greater things that Jesus promised we would do.

Healing Our Divides: Answering the Savior’s Call to Be Peacemakers is a timely and essential guide for navigating the increasingly polarized and contentious landscape of modern society. Ostler explores the skills and approaches necessary to eliminate contention and become peacemakers. Rooted in principles of religious discipleship and moral integrity, Healing Our Divides addresses the urgent need to confront societal division and hostility with love and understanding. Ostler delves into four major themes, including understanding today's divisions, learning practical approaches to reduce contention, recognizing peacemaking as a vital aspect of religious discipleship, and mastering the art of deep and meaningful discussion. With insightful thought boxes prompting self-reflection and engagement, as well as questions for group study, he invites readers to join in the communal effort of healing divides and fostering unity. This book serves as a poignant reminder of our collective responsibility to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ and work towards creating a more peaceful and harmonious world, one interaction at a time.

A profound and insightful investigation into how the American Civil War transformed modern medicine. At the start of the Civil War, the medical field in America was rudimentary, unsanitary, and woefully underprepared to address what would become the bloodiest conflict on U.S. soil. However, in this historic moment of pivotal social and political change, medicine was also fast evolving to meet the needs of the time. Unprecedented strides were made in the science of medicine, and as women and African Americans were admitted into the field for the first time. The Civil War marked a revolution in healthcare as a whole, laying the foundations for the system we know today. In Healing a Divided Nation, Carole Adrienne will track this remarkable and bloody transformation in its cultural and historical context, illustrating how the advancements made in these four years reverberated throughout the western world for years to come. Analyzing the changes in education, society, humanitarianism, and technology in addition to the scientific strides of the period lends Healing a Divided Nation a uniquely wide lens to the topic, expanding the legacy of the developments made. The echoes of Civil War medicine are in every ambulance, every vaccination, every woman who holds a paying job, and in every Black university graduate. Those echoes are in every response of the International and American Red Cross and they are in the recommended international protocol for the treatment of prisoners of war and wounded soldiers. Beginning with the state of medicine at the outset of the war, when doctors did not even know about sterilizing their tools, Adrienne illuminates the transformation in American healthcare through primary source texts that document the lives and achievements of the individuals who pioneered these changes in medicine and society. The story that ensues is one of American innovation and resilience in the face of unparalleled violence, adding a new dimension to the legacy of the Civil War.

Back in November 2010, I had the opportunity to visit Israel. One of the places we stopped was Tabgha, on the north-west shore of the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus prepared breakfast for his disciples, and where He 'reinstated' Peter. As I leaned up against the rock plateau on which Peter and Jesus likely sat side-by-side, I felt as though I heard Jesus whispering those same words to me, "David, feed my lambs. Take care of my sheep. Feed my sheep." If I fail to believe God's Word, if I fail to instruct, if I fail to lead and encourage, then I have failed this call miserably. As I was thinking about writing this book, I had no qualms about poking the proverbial hornets' nest. I knew many of the answers would be contentious, but I also knew they had to be stated. This is not a book that needs to be liked. It is a book that discusses a deadly problem and its cause, that is the division in the church, and it clearly lays out the [drastic] corrective remedies needed. Almost from the outset of the COVID epidemic, a clear divide has ruptured many church communities but, I want to emphasize from the outset that COVID is not the cause of the problem, it is merely a symptom of a much, much deeper problem.
