Excerpt from Health in War There has never been a period in American history when diffusion of knowledge of the laws of nature was a more im mediate and a more imperative duty than at the present time. Hundreds of thousands of young men and young women are ready to offer their services and, if need be, their lives for their country and for the great principles of loyalty, truth, justice, humanity and liberty for which our President has enlisted us in this world war. But let not a single life be lost needlessly. Let no constitution be broken by disease through ignorance. The patriotic Opportunity of all men of science is to spread the truth, and to spread it as quickly as possible. Let us speak plainly of all the dangers and enemies which surround the soldier and the sailor, of those that kill the soul as well as those which destroy the body. The loss to the world of the finest strains of manhood is the most awful curse of the many curses attending this war. Every young man, if single, must think of his future wife, of his future home, of his future children and so live that, if his life is spared, he may some day give to his coun try one of the greatest gifts it is in a man's and woman's power to give - healthy and patriotic offspring. It is a scientific, no less than a religious principle, that to serve one's country one must be sound in body, sound in mind, and sound in Spirit. In opening a food and health exposition, the American Museum is in cooperation with the Council of National Defence and especially with its Medical Board, also With the National Food Commission under Herbert C. Hoover. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Excerpt from The Doctor in War As I had more than half anticipated, I found there the finest and most triumphant demonstration of what modern science can do for the protection of the health and life of an army or a nation ever given in history, equaling if not surpassing the hitherto unrivaled victory of the forces which save life on the Panama Canal. Thanks to the personal kindness of the Secretary of War, Mr. Baker, and of my friend Colonel Roosevelt, together with the courtesy of my medical colleagues, I secured letters of introduction and papers which made me successful beyond my expectations in securing permission to see almost every thing of any value or interest from a medical and public health point of view, from the Base Hospitals up to the Aid Posts in the front-line trenches and from the munition works and T raining-camps to the Hospital Ships and the British Fleet. Excerpt from War With Disease The first three editions of this book were sold almost exclusively to the army at home and abroad, while the fourth was bought largely by the public. Recently, a demand coming from officers and men of the Territorial Army enables me to bring out a fifth edition of War with Disease. The book has now been sold in every country where the British flag flies, the frequent orders from India being specially gratifying. I have to thank the many commanding officers who have paid me the compliment of having parts of the lectures read out regularly to their men. Since I first delivered the lectures contained in this little book, I have had the honour of repeating them to the officers of the Staff College in Camberley. For this audience I went a little more deeply into the scientific reasons for the suggestions I made. Were I to redeliver the lectures, I could in many cases change recommendations into reports of the actual results of the effects produced by carrying out the plan of campaign recommended in War with Disease. These results are ia-all respects most gratifying. Indeed, in more than one case commanding officers have been able to inform me that the result of acting upon the principles laid down has been a clean bill of health for the regiment, and statistics prove how greatly the health of the Army, as a whole, has improved within the past two years. I do not attempt to take any credit for this, but as one who has taken some part in directing the fight against disease, the fact that the fight is a winning one gives me very great pleasure. War Cholera And The Ministry Of Health written by James John Garth Wilkinson and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-07 with Medical categories.

Excerpt from War, Cholera, and the Ministry of Health: An Appeal to Sir Benjamin Hall Sir, and my Countrymen, 1. Public casualties open the world's heart and eyes, insure the progress of decent fairness, bring mankind to books, to facts, and to its Maker, and clear away at a heavy, although at the least cost, the obstructions which detain us from better days. The measure of the evil to be got rid of, is given in the weight and stripes of the rod that is used. The present rod is pestilence, the number of whose lashes is not yet complete. For what crime, or for what purpose, is the infliction laid on? 2. There cannot be a doubt that sin is the effectual caller of all misery, and that the cholera is a consequence of our sins. These sins however are of many kinds, and it is not about those which have a simply religious bearing that I am going to speak. Physical and medical sins, acknowledged as such in the sight of God also, are those which I shall try to bring home to you, in order that their special repentance, and a regeneration thereafter, may be insured. Other repentances are urged by other appointed voices, and to them also let us respond, Amen. 3. The British nation, like every other in Christendom, contains within it many solid and compact organizations which have come from old times, and which have well nigh all power in several great departments of action and thought. Among these are the professions, medical, clerical, legal, and many others. Huge social fortresses, they stand above the interests of individual houses, nominally for protection and defence. Yet there is not one of them but supports a continual siege against its own times and peoples; and what is termed reform is always accompanied by the razing of some part of their outworks, or of the very citadels themselves. Each fortalice is taken up by turns, and becomes the subject of an indispensable providential assault; the immediate cause of which is some calamity, or hard necessity which identifies these towers of the past with our straightness, our evils, and our sins; and preaches a brave, God-fearing self-reliance, and a fresh appeal to the sword of our spirits in the great Battle of Facts. The medical profession, with its black, innumerable dungeons, is at present brought, by the benignant pestilence, into clear opposition with the interests of man; and it is to summon you into the ranks of the human powers arrayed against it, that my duty now takes up its otherwise unwilling pen. 4. The medical profession, as such, is confessedly powerless in the presence of cholera. Medical science itself has the disease in its most virulent form. Not a remedy keeps upon its irritable stomach from day to day. There is no power of holding anything healing, but the whole Pharmacop ia rushes with noisome velocity through this miserable art. Excerpt from How to Keep "Fit," or the Soldiers' Guide to Health, in War and Peace: With Tips to Gas Poisoning, Frost Bite, Inoculation, Etc., EtcAs a rule, twenty minutes is long enough for anyone to remain in the water. In tropical climates this may be safely exceeded. After drying with a rough towel, you should have a pleasing glow}7 of the skin, and feeling of exhilaration. If you are blue, cold and numb, and do not quickly get warm, bath ing is unsafe and harmful for you, or you have stayed in too long.Opeorsons subject to palpitation, giddiness, or cramp should not bathe without medical consent. If you fall into deep water, and cannot swim, keep your hands down, and you will rise toothe surface. By paddling you raise your head, and by the move ment of walking upstairs your shoulders will rise above water.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from National Health: From Magic, Mystery, and Medicine, to a National Health Service War, it is said, brings forth the best and highest qualities of a nation; but the Great European War has revealed many weak spots in our National armour, and we must rise to a higher level of Social Organization if we are to retain our proud position as a leader among the nations. Germany has learned the advantages and power to be gained by National action, and will consequently be a more dangerous rival after the War than she was before, unless we also have learned the same lesson. The nineteenth century was the century of Individualism: the twentieth promises to be the century of Social Organization. The Government Committee on Recon struction is evolving many schemes. The health of the nation is worthy of, and calls for, early and full consideration and the reconstruction of our organization for main taining it and combating disease demands immediate attention. The following chapters have been written with a View to stimulating public thought on this very important subject.
